Cellular Respiration (Aerobic)

What is Cellular Respiration? A chemical process that releases energy from food molecules

Where does Cellular Respiration take place? In the mitochondria of cells

When does Cellular Respiration Occur? Only in the presence of oxygen (aerobic)

How does Cellular Respiration Happen? C6H12O6 + 6O2 ------------> 6CO2 + 6 H2O + 36-38 ATP 1 glucose molecule + 6 oxygen = 6 water molecules + 6 carbon dioxide molecules + 36 - 38 ATP molecules

Why does Cellular Respiration Occur? Very efficient; provides lots of energy - you get 36 - 38 ATP’s from each molecule of glucose Drawback: not very fast; complicated process - takes longer than fermentation
