FACT : “Most grid-tied solar systems will not receive power from their PV arrays during a grid failure.” Solution: With a power system based around intelligent Inverters, it is now possible to have complete control over when, if and how you use grid electricity. The addition of Victron Inverter Chargers and LG Chem battery storage opens up a world of possibilities. How the system works: The batteries are charged during the day by means of solar energy. If the solar panels are still generating energy when the batteries have been fully charged, this surplus electricity is fed back into the national grid. This means that the batteries are always fully charged so that these can be put to use at night-time.In the summer, when there is adequate solar energy, the house or business can run up to 3 weeks at a time without recourse to the national grid. If there is too little sun to power the batteries, which is more likely in the winter months, the system can tap into the national grid to recharge the batteries. The system is also connected to a generator so that it’s possible to operate independently from the energy provider.

Self Sufficient Power Using Victron Power The solution described in this presentation is based on the testing of the Victron Inverter Charger with different grid connect inverters. The aim is to allow the self use system to be retro fitted to existing grid connected homes. This can be achieved either by splitting the array between the existing grid connect inverter and a second AC coupling capable inverter. This can also be achieved with additional array. In both installs the existing grid feed contract is not affected, only reduced in size.

The existing inverter remains connected to the grid and the existing array. The install site must have a minimum of a 4 kW array. If the site has less than 4 kw an additional array is required. The test site was a 2 string 5 kw array. The grid connect inverter was a dual MPPT inverter. One string remained connected to the existing inverter. A new grid connect inverter was installed witha dual MPPT input. It was selected as an AC coupled inverter with the appropriate frequency shift functionality. The second PV input can provide an input for another array if further self use power is required. The AC coupled inverter will have Wi-Fi connectivity and a smart phone app for customer monitoring.

Quattro inverter / charger 3kVA - 10kVA Lithium Ion battery compatible Two AC inputs with integrated transfer switch The Quattro can be connected to two independent AC sources, for example shore-side power and a generator, or two generators. The Quattro will automatically connect to the active source. Two AC Outputs The main output has no-break functionality. The Quattro takes over the supply to the connected loads in the event of a grid failure or when shore/generator power is disconnected. This happens so fast (less than 20 milliseconds) that computers and other electronic equipment will continue to operate without disruption. The second output is live only when AC is available on one of the inputs of the Quattro. Loads that should not discharge the battery, like a water heater for example, can be connected to this output.
