1 SMUD - Whole Foods Energy Storage System
Stephen A. Kirin May 4, 2017

2 Whole Foods Market – About the Company
High quality natural & organic grocery store Strong environmental stewardship with a Green Mission Plan Reduce, Reuse, Recycle approach Alternative Energy planning Wind Purchased Renewable Energy Credits to offset 100% of electricity used in all stores. Solar As of stores and facilities use solar Electric Vehicle As of 2015 over 70 EV charging stations installed

3 Whole Foods Market What Motivated Whole Foods to pursue and install a battery storage system? Innovative technology and the possibility of energy savings, load shifting, and other grid services were the main motivating factors. What was your experience through installation? The installation was very straight forward, integration was seamless with next to zero impact to store operations.

4 Whole Foods Market -Site specific information
Arden store location is a leased property with NO ability or access to PV. Interconnection guidelines required NO NEM Target use cases / applications of Battery Storage System Peak Load Shifting – Charge storage when energy costs are lowest and discharge storage when energy costs are highest. Demand Charge Management – establish new lower maximum demand charge.

5 Stem Battery Storage System
Stem installed a 36kW/72kWH (2 hour) Lithium Ion battery Stem manages the dispatch of the battery for Whole Foods to best meet use cases outlined previously Battery installation did qualify for Self Generation Incentive Program – SGIP

6 SMUD Purpose was to develop a behind the meter battery storage research project SMUD incentive of 50% construction cost Evaluation on system performance to be completed at the end of 2017

7 Performance Customer cost per kW significantly lower in SMUD territory limiting savings in demand reduction Optimized Peak load reduction of 9.7kW during summer and 18.7kW during winter resulting in a savings of only $904 over 14 months Behind the meter storage deployments in SMUD territory remain NOT cost effective
