Organ Systems Skeletal Muscular Circulatory Respiratory Integumentary Immune Digestive Excretory Nervous Endocrine

Skeletal Includes all the bones and joints in the body. Also includes tissues like cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. Each bone is a complex living organ that is made up of many cells, protein fibers, and minerals. Skeleton acts as the scaffold/framework of the body providing support and protection. New blood cells are produced by the marrow inside of our bones.

Tissues in skeletal system

Muscular Estimated 700 muscles! Nearly half your body weight! Responsible for movement of the human body. Each muscle is an organ made of muscle tissue, blood vessels, tendons, and nerves. Types of muscle tissue: cardiac muslce, skeletal muscle, and smooth muscle.

Tissues and Cells of the Muscular System

Circulatory Consists of the heart, blood vessels, and about 5 liters of blood. Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and cell waste through the body. Organs involved: heart, lungs, brain Tissues: cardiac muscle tissue, connective tissue, nervous tissue Cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets

Respiratory Provides oxygen to the body’s cells while removing carbon dioxide. 3 major parts Airway (nose, mouth, trachea) Lungs Muscles of respiration (diaphragm)

Integumentary Organ system consisting of skin, hair, nails, and exocrine glands. Skin (largest organ) is body’s outer covering and protects from chemicals, disease, etc. Exocrine glands produce sweat, oil, and wax to cool, protect, and moisturize the skin.

Immune The body’s defense system against infectious viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Lymphatic nodes act as a filter, screening out debris and pathogens. Organs and tissues Lymph nodes Red bone marrow Tonsils Spleen

Digestive Converts food into basic energy and nutrients to feed the body. Mouth (teeth, tongue, saliva) Stomach (digestive enzymes) Small intestine (absorbs nutrients) Liver, gallbladder, pancreas Large intestine (absorbs water)

Excretory Filters and removes liquid waste from the body. Kidneys Filter all the blood, removing harmful molecules. The waste is expelled through the bladder in the form of urine.

Nervous Responsible for control of the body and communication among its parts. Consists of brain, spinal cord, sensory organs, and all the nerves throughout the body. Sensory organ collect information Brain and spinal cord process info and make decisions Nerves relay message across body, causing body to respond to environment

Endocrine Consists of all the glands and hormones produced in the body. Controls the growth, development, metabolism, and reproduction of an organism. Controlled directly by nervous system. Produces things like Human Growth Hormones, serotonin, testosterone, estrogen.
