Locating Places on a Map Chapter 3

1. Compass Points & Bearings Compass points are used to show direction on a compass rose, the cardinal points (also known as the principle points) are North, East, South, & West) Ordinal Points: The halfway points between the cardinal (principle) points – NE, SE, SW, NW

Open your books to page 31 Compass Bearings Measure the angle of a direction in relation to the North arrow. Open your books to page 31

2. Grid System Alphanumeric grid system Uses letters and numerals to identify locations within a particular square in a grid system. Numbers are put on the X axis, and letters on the Y axis.

Volunteers to put their answers on the board for 2b please 

4-Digit military grid reference Combine the easting (vertical lines) and northing (horizontal lines) numbers by following the horizontal & vertical axis. The easting number is always listed first.

Volunteer to put their answers on the board for 2d please 

6-digit military grid reference Count how many tenths of the way east and north the location is.

Volunteer to put their answers on the board for 2f please 

3. Latitude & Longitude a) The center of the earth is located in the _________. It’s address is ______˚ latitude and _____˚ longitude. b) From this address, a gridwork of lines extends _____ - ________ and ________ - _______. c) Any location in the world can be determined by figuring out where a line of _________ meets a line of ___________.

d) Latitude are horizontal lines that measure _____ and _______ from the equator. e) Longitude are vertical lines that measure ______ and ______ from the prime meridian
