Information and Communications Technology Stage 1 Presentation

Table of Contents A. What will I learn in Stage 1? B. Overview of Hardware & Software C. Laptop Computers D. Desktop Computers E. Storage F. Peripheral Hardware

Part A: What will I learn in Stage 1? By the time you finish Stage 1, you should be able to: Describe the difference between hardware and software List the basic parts of a computer system and describe what they do

Part B: Overview of Hardware and Software Computers use hardware and software. Hardware means the parts of a computer that you can see and touch, including the case and everything inside it. Hardware items include your monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, and other parts. Software means the instructions, or programs, that tell the hardware what to do. The Operating System (OS) is software that manages your computer and the parts connected to it. Our school computers use the Windows operating systems. Software also includes application software such as Word and Excel.

Part C: Laptop Computers The basic hardware of a laptop computer includes: screen keyboard speakers touchpad battery AC adaptor

Parts of a Laptop Computer 1. The screen is where the computer shows text, pictures, and videos. 2. The keyboard is used to type letters, numbers, and symbols into the computer. It is one of the main ways you communicate with the computer and enter data.

Parts of a Laptop Computer 3. Speakers are usually small and built into the screen or body of the laptop. The speakers allow you to hear computer sounds, audio from the Internet, CDs and DVDs, and more.

Parts of a Laptop Computer 4. On a laptop, a touchpad is used like a mouse. Move your finger on the touchpad to move around the screen and select text and objects. The buttons below the touchpad operate like mouse buttons.

Parts of a Laptop Computer 5. The battery gives power to the laptop. It allows you to use the laptop without having to be near a power outlet. The battery usually needs to be recharged after 2 – 3 hours of use without being plugged in. The battery is found on the underside of the laptop.   6. The AC Adaptor is the source of electric power for a laptop. The power adapter does two jobs when it is plugged in. It powers the laptop and charges the battery. It is usually attached at the back or side of the

Part D: Desktop Computers The basic hardware of a desktop computer includes: System unit Monitor Keyboard Mouse

Parts of a Desktop Computer 1. The system unit is the central part of a computer system. Usually it's a rectangular box placed on or underneath your desk. Inside this box are many electronic parts, including the “brain” of your computer. Almost every other part of your computer connects to the system unit using cables. System Unit

Parts of a Desktop Computer 2. A monitor shows information that you can see in words, pictures and videos. The part of the monitor that shows the information is called the screen, just like in a laptop computer. There are two basic types of monitors: CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors and LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors. LCD monitors are much thinner and lighter, but CRT monitors are less expensive. LCD monitor CRT Monitor 

Parts of a Desktop Computer 3. The keyboard is used to type letters, numbers, and symbols into the computer. It is one of the main ways you communicate with the computer and enter data.

Parts of a Desktop Computer 4. A mouse is used to point to and select items on your computer screen. A mouse usually has two buttons: a left button (the primary button) and a right button (the secondary button). Many mice also have a wheel between the two buttons, which allows you to scroll smoothly through screens of information. To scroll is to move up and down on a page, or left and right on a page.

Parts of a Desktop Computer When you move the mouse with your hand, a pointer on your screen moves in the same direction. When you want to select an item, you point to the item and then click (press and release) the primary button. Pointing and clicking with your mouse is the main way to interact with your computer. The pointer's appearance might change depending on where it is on your screen. Three types of pointers

Part E: Storage A laptop or desktop computer has one or more disk drives, devices that store information on a metal or plastic disk. The disk holds the information even when your computer is turned off.   You will learn about four types of storage drives: Hard disk drives Floppy disk drives CD/DVD drives USB Flash drives

Storage Hard disk drive Your computer's hard disk drive stores information on a hard disk. Hard disks can hold huge amounts of information, so they are usually used as your computer's primary means of storage, holding almost all of your programs and files. The hard disk drive is normally found inside the system unit. System Unit

Storage Floppy disk drive Floppy disk drives store information on floppy disks. Compared to CDs and DVDs, floppy disks can store only a small amount of data (information). They also read information more slowly and are more easily damaged. For these reasons, floppy disk drives are less popular than they used to be, although some computers still include them. a floppy disk

Storage CD/DVD Drives Nearly all computers today have a CD or DVD drive, usually found on the front of the system unit. CD drives use lasers to read data from a CD, and many CD drives can also write (or record) data onto CDs. If you have a recordable disk drive, you can store copies of your files on blank CDs. You can also use a CD drive to play music CDs on your computer. DVD drives can do everything that CD drives can, plus read DVDs. If you have a DVD drive, you can watch movies on your computer. Many DVD drives can record data onto blank DVDs.

Storage USB Flash Drive A USB flash drive is a storage device which is removable from a computer. Compared to floppy disks or CDs, USB flash drives are smaller, faster, and can have thousands of times more capacity. A USB flash drive capacity can be as large as 256 GB. A USB flash drive is plugged into the USB port of a computer

Part F: Peripheral Hardware We have already learned about some hardware, including the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Some other common hardware that we will learn about are: Printer Speakers, Headphones, and Earphones Microphone Modem Wireless Router

Peripheral Hardware Printer A printer takes data from a computer and puts it onto paper.   The two main types of printers are inkjet printers and laser printers. Inkjet printers are the most popular printers for the home. They can print in black and white or color. Laser printers are faster and able to handle heavy use.  Inkjet Printer Laser Printer 

Peripheral Hardware Speakers Headphones and Earphones Speakers are used to play sound. They may be built into the system unit or connected with cables. Speakers allow you to listen to music and hear sound effects from your computer. These are played aloud so that others can listen with you. Speakers Headphones and Earphones Some computer users like to use headphones or earphones to play sound from a computer. Headphones have a band on top and are worn over the ears, and earphones have small “buds” that go into the ears. The sound is played only to the ears of the person using the headphones or earphones. Headphones Earphones

Peripheral Hardware Microphone Sometimes abbreviated as mic, a microphone allows computer users to input audio (sound) into their computers. They can speak into a microphone and record their voices. Another common use for microphones is to have “voice chats” over the Internet. Some headsets have headphones and microphones combined together. Headset with headphones and microphone a computer microphone

Peripheral Hardware Modem To connect your computer to the Internet, you need a modem. A modem is a device that sends and receives computer information over a telephone line or high-speed cable. Modems are sometimes built into the system unit, but higher-speed modems are usually separate components. modem

Peripheral Hardware Wireless Router A wireless router is a piece of hardware that connects a number of computers together in a network. Once networked, the computers can share resources such as files or an Internet connection. It is common for many offices and even homes to have a wireless network so all the computers can share the Internet connection, even if they have file sharing turned off. Many office and home networks are also used to share printers. wireless router
