Introduction and Overview of the D20 Product GE’s Substation Automation Intro What is the D20 product? D20 product evolution Introduction and Overview of the D20 Product

Reliability, Dependability, Long term product availability Substation Automation Intro: Executive Summary Who are we? Substation Automation Market leader with over two decades of experience in the industry What are we good at? GE Substation Automation built its name in the market around unmatched reputation on quality products of the D20 Brand What is GE’s D20 Core Competence? Reliability, Dependability, Long term product availability

What is the D20? More than 40,000 installed D20 RTUs; trusted name in Substation Automation since 1988 Proven technology with unparalleled quality Flexible, modular and scalable substation automation platform: Powerful real-time concurrent, multi-protocol translator Rich portfolio of diverse I/O options Centralized or distributed architectures Small / Medium / Large SCADA Redundant Systems Pioneering application model for rapid localized custom developments by established network of VAR partners globally Single node, D20 horizontal chassis Multiple node, D200 vertical chassis Remote I/O [Status, Control, Analog] Modules

(F) Today’s utility networks are too immense to communicate directly with every IED in the system There has been and will continue to be a need for aggregation of control functionality, operational and non- operational data at the substation level. This function is served by a substation controller. (E) I thought the D20 was an RTU? (F) The Substation controller is also known under different names: RTU SMART RTU Gateway SCADA Controller IP Server Data Concentrator Automation Controller The list goes on… The important thing to keep in mind is the functionality

But first, what is a D20 RTU? - The D20 provides substation automation using an array of data collection applications, data translation applications and data processing applications. These applications are used to collect data from downstream substation devices, process these data and report them to SCADA, EMS DMS and other master enterprise systems. Let me take you back in time to put things into perspective. In the LATE 80s, the 1st Generation of the D20 series of product , D20M, was introduced. It was designed to be a single board computer that collects and aggregates data from a selected number of down-stream electronic devices found within a substation. There weren’t a lot of vendors making down-stream devices such as relays, meters or remote I/O devices back then. In fact, communication interfaces with these devices were point-to-point: either a serial type of communication or strictly hardwired type of communications. Over the next decade and half or more, due to the exponential growth in substation Intelligent Electronic Devices and multiple vendor communication protocols, four other D20 series were successively introduced: D20M+; D20M++; D20ME and D20MEII. These D20 devices adopted a more advance communication scheme such as Ethernet over a wide or local area network; they communicated via numerous advanced protocols to a lot more vendor products that provides functions such as transformer monitoring to SCADA or EMS automation within an enterprise system. Thus, creating an evolution of D20 products providing simple automation applications to a more advanced automation with much faster processor and larger storage capacity. 6th Generation D20 with NERC-CIP considerations Replacement for D20ME/MEII CPUs
