Spelling , Punctuation and Grammar workshop SPaG Corrie Primary School Spelling , Punctuation and Grammar workshop SPaG

At Corrie Primary School.... We believe that the focussed teaching of spelling, punctuation and grammar will enable each child to arrange words in sentences, add the correct punctuation thus helping them to communicate their ideas effectively.   We teach the meaning of word groups in order to give the children these fundamental skills to develop and improve their writing. Spelling is incorporated into the Guided Reading, Literacy lessons and Phonics lessons. The children have weekly SPaG lessons this is presented in different ways depending on the year group.

National Curriculum 2014   We have been using the new national curriculum since 2014 There has been a raised expectation for all children Spelling – linked with Literacy ( English) lessons and Phonics lessons  Vocabulary, Punctuation and Grammar Statutory requirements taken directly from the National Curriculum

Year group expectations. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/335190/English_Appendix_2_-_Vocabulary_grammar_and_punctuation.pdf

Grammar, spelling and punctuation are key areas in the teaching of English. - Develop children’s ability to use language clearly, concisely and effectively - Help children use Standard English where appropriate - Provide children with the vocabulary they need to discuss, reflect on and understand grammar, spelling and punctuation - Meet the statutory curriculum requirements . How do we do this ?

How do we teach SPaG? In Nursery – the children cover the Phase 1 of Phonics : Phase One of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills. Phase 1 is divided into seven aspects. Each aspect contains three strands: Tuning in to sounds (auditory discrimination), Listening and remembering sounds (auditory memory and sequencing) and Talking about sounds.

Reception, year 1 and year2 Phonics. In these classes the children have daily phonics lessons for twenty minutes covering Phase2, 3, 4, 5 and Phase 6 ( spelling ). http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/phase-2.html

Spelling – Year group: Reception to year 6. Spelling: Key words, common exception words, tricky words. file:///C:/Users/Supply1/Desktop/T-L-5468-Common-Exception-Words-Assessment-Year-1_ver_3.pdf https://www.corrie.tameside.sch.uk/category/classes/4d/ Each year group has a spelling list and these are set as homework. They are practised in Guided Reading.

Punctuation and Grammar –ks1 In year 1 and 2 this is integrated into all the learning. It is taught directly in Literacy ( English), Phonics, Guided reading and specific SPaG focus lessons. The staff use a range of games and resources. Phonics Play Letters and sounds Bite size

Punctuation and Grammar-KS2 In years 3, 4, 5, 6, this is integrated into all the learning. It is taught directly in Literacy ( English), Phonics, Guided reading and specific SPaG focus lessons. Assessment The children are assessed using formative assessment every half term and termly. They are assessed on their spelling knowledge and on their phonic knowledge. The school use a diagnostic test to give an indication of the children's knowledge and skills in SPaG. Using the Rising Stars assessment tool.
