5. Phonics at Lambton
Phonics begins in nursery and throughout KS1. At Lambton, we use a scheme called Read Write Inc. which uses a systematic approach. Systematic phonics is a method of teaching reading through the identification of sounds and graphemes.

11. Phase 1: Nursery Getting ready for phonics
Phase 1 phonics begins in nursery. A slightly different scheme is followed, which is called ‘Phase 1 - Letters and Sounds’. Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations.
The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills

12. Sound pronunciation
To support with reading in phonics, we use what we call ‘pure sounds’. Children need to know the letter sounds - not the letter names - so that they can blend them together in order to read.

Once the children know the pure sounds, we teach them to blend sounds to read words.
We use Fred Talk to help children sound out and read words.

16. How can I help at home?
Nursery- Phonics play phase 1. Games to support environmental sounds. Nursery rhymes.
Read to your children- ask questions and share opinions
Talk to your child- feed them with new and ambitious vocabulary
Support with recognising and saying the pure sounds, using Fred talk when they are reading and Fred fingers when they are spelling.

18. Phonics screening
At the end of Year 1, the children will take the statutory National Phonic Screening Test. This will take place in June.
Practice tests from the Year 1 teacher will be sent home to pratise.
If children are still working towards the phonic test by the end of Year 1 then they will work in small intervention groups to enable them to retake the test in Year 2.
