What is FaceTime? FaceTime is a videotelephony application designed by Apple for use in mobile devices connected to a wireless network. FaceTime uses the camera and WIFI of the device to create face to face conversations via the internet.

How FaceTime Works: Cloud Computing Cloud computing is the use of computing resources that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the Internet). Has the ability to run a program or application on multiple devices at the same time. Allows all users to use the application at the same time and communicate with one another.

How FaceTime Works: Wireless Networks A wireless network is any type of computer network that uses wireless data connections for connecting network nodes. Allows homes, cellular companies, and business’s to have internet connection while avoiding physical cables. Wireless networks allow FaceTime to connect to internet and run the application.

How FaceTime Works: Mobile Devices Mobile devices allow users to connect, call and message other people from any location. They can connect to wireless networks free of charge and allow users internet access. FaceTime was designed specifically for mobile devices such as the iphone and ipad.

Collaboration With FaceTime FaceTime can be used in the business world and personal conversations. Allows users in groups or organizations to collaborate and meet from any location. Multiple uses:

Advantages of FaceTime: Business There are several advantages when using facetime for business. No offices No back and fourth commute to and from work Saves company a substantial amount of money Better and cheaper consumer services Can be performed if out of town

Advantages of FaceTime: Personal Use Communicate with friends and family in separate locations More personal

Disadvantages of FaceTime Although the pros of using FaceTime highly outweighs the cons, there are still some disadvantages. You need to be connected to a wireless network Poor connection may result in lag time and occasional disconnection Only available through Apple

How FaceTime Has Changed Communication Allows people to have real face to face conversations from different locations Service is free while connected to WIFI Portable devices save time and money spent commuting to office

Conclusion: Facetime has created a totally new way of communication that is likely going to continue to evolve. It has created a way for people to see, hear and communicate with each other while being in completely different locations. As you saw, it’s uses expand from personal conversations with friends and family, to business meetings in corporations. Not to mention it accomplished all this while being FREE of charge, and only requiring a wireless connection.
