CONFUCIANISM

AIM: How does Confucianism influence Chinese society? Do Now: What forever factors are present in this paining? Winslow Homer “Veteran in the New Field” (1865) Just finished from war, civil war, he has seen war and its effects and now has come back in tune with nature.

Quiz! 1) What is the cause of suffering for Buddhism? What is the cause of suffering for Taoism? 2) What is the solution for suffering under Buddhism?/Taoism?

I’m sorry So, what is Confucianism? It is a religion that is definitely NOT a religion. It’s focus is this world, not the afterlife. Simply put, it is a system of how to live in society Motivation: I will approach a student in the classroom. I will say I am sorry I did not say good morning/afternoon while they were walking into the classroom. “No! It’s wrong that I did not say it to you!” “Please forgive me!” “I am so disrespectful!” “Our class, our school, our community, our civilization will collapse because I did not say good morning to you!”

Confucius 551 – 479 B.C.E. When Confucius was about 15 years old, he became quite interested in learning. In those days, only the nobility and royals were allowed education. It was hard for Confucius to find a way to learn. He couldn't go to the public library or go to public school. These things did not yet exist in ancient China.  He went to work for a nobleman who gave him an education

Major Confucian Principles Rules and Rituals (Binding force of a stable society) Be good to other people “ Do not do unto others what you would not want others to do unto you.” Respect your elders! His teaching focused on ethics and proper behavior for individuals and governments. CONFUSIANISM = ETHICAL BEHAVIOR BUDDHISM= SPIRITUAL OUTLOOK

5 Principle Relationships 1. Ruler Subject 2. Father Son 3. Husband Wife Father & son want to be the superior man, PEOPLE ARE LOCKED INTO THESE POSITIONS. YOU HAVE A ROLE, YOU MUST FOLLOW IT. LADIES, WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE YOUR OWN JOB SOMEDAY? TOO BAD, THAT’S NOT YOUR ROLE IN SOCIETY 4. Older Brother Younger Brother 5. Older Friend Younger Friend

Organizing Principles Status Age Gender

Confucian Temple Complex

The Analects In Chinese, it means “conversation.” The single most important Confucian work. In Chinese, it means “conversation.” Focus on people’s relationships with each other

Sayings from The Analects Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. Making a mistake and not correcting it, is making another mistake. The superior man blames himself; the inferior man blames others. To go too far is as wrong as to fall short.

Social Unity is ALL THAT MATTERS! The emperor should be an example of proper behavior --> “big daddy” Value on the good of the many, rather than the few Why do people suffer? Lack of social order

HOMEWORK We’ve looked at three religions that focus on finding the source of suffering and each offers a solution. What do you think is the cause of suffering? What is your solution? Which philosophy is most similar to yours? (Buddhism/Confucianism/Taoism)
