2009 Estimates for the HIV/AIDS epidemic in China

Aims and estimation methods To provide update on estimates of populations affected by HIV to guide policy and programming. Methods Workbook was used for development of the estimates. Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) and Spectrum were used to estimate the number of new infections and deaths after consideration of the impact of antiretroviral treatment.

Summary of the AIDS epidemic in 2009 People living with HIV 740,000 Number of AIDS 105,000 New HIV infections 48,000 Deaths due to AIDS 26,000 HIV prevalence 0.057%

Key result of HIV/AIDS estimates, 2003-2009 2005 2007 2009 PLHIV 840,000 650,000 [540,000 –760,000] 700,000 [550,000 – 850,000] 740,000 [560,000 – 920,000] AIDS 80,000 75,000 [65,000 – 85,000] 85,000 [80,000– 90,000] 105,000 [97,000 – 112,000] AIDS death -- 25,000 [20,000 – 30,000] 20,000 [15,000 – 25,000] 26,000 [22,000 – 30,000] New HIV infection -- 70,000 [60,000 – 80,000] 50,000 [40,000 – 60,000] 48,000 [41,000 – 55,000] HIV prevalence 0.064% 0.050% [0.042% – 0.058%] 0.054% [0.042% – 0.065%] 0.057% [0.043% – 0.071%]

Estimated number of people living with HIV Total 740,000 Adults (%) 731,000 (98.8%) Children under 15 years (%) 9,000 (1.2%) Women aged 15 and above (%) 225,700 (30.5%)

Geographical distribution of estimated 740,000 PLHIV in 2009

Mode of transmission– total PLHIV in 2009 Total number of PLHIV: 740,000

Mode of transmission – new HIV infections in 2009 Total number of new infections: 48,000

Epidemic features in China The rate of increase in the growth of the epidemic has slowed further. Sexual transmission continues to be the primary mode of HIV transmission, with homosexual transmission increasing rapidly. National prevalence is low, but the epidemic is serious in some areas and among some most-at-risk populations. The number of people affected by HIV/AIDS is increasing and modes of transmission are diversifying.

Reporting data of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in China by end 2009

Annual reported HIV positives and AIDS cases 1985-2009

Geographical distribution of cumulative reported HIV positives ( as end of 2009 )

Geographical distribution of cumulative reported AIDS cases ( at end of 2009 )

Annual transmission breakdowns of reported HIV/AIDS cases, 1985-2009

HIV sentinel surveillance data on different groups 1995-2009
