Introduction to DSC ClassView

Being a Writer Second Edition Assessment Overview The assessments in Being a Writer are designed to help the teacher: Make informed instructional decisions Track students’ writing growth and social development over time The assessments require the teacher to reflect on the instruction and the students’ growth as writers through observing students, conferring with individual students, and assessing students’ writing.

Being a Writer Second Edition Assessment Revision Goal for the assessment revision: Maintain our underlying beliefs about the purposes of our assessments while providing more support in the following areas: Assessing students who are in the early stages of writing development Identifying the main focus of each unit’s instruction Assigning grades to students’ writing (non-published and published) Assessing skills development (grammar, usage, and mechanics) Organizing and collecting assessment data from all components of the program to create a complete picture of the student as a writer

What is ClassView? Web-based application (webapp) that includes all of the resources included in the Assessment Resource Book. ClassView enables the teacher to: electronically collect, sort, synthesize, and report assessment data for each student. generate reports on the progress of individual students and the class as a whole. upload and manage samples of student work. download, print, and share assessment forms (blank and completed) and reports. easily access anecdotal data recorded during lessons, conferences, or when assessing student writing.

What is ClassView? Designed to run on computers and tablets (OSX, Windows, Android, IOS) Designed to be single application for all Collaborative Literacy programs and for all grades (K-5)* Designed so that forms can be easily accessed (via the Digital Teacher’s Set, the DSC Learning Hub, or directly within the ClassView application) *Currently includes assessments for Being a Writer, but will include other Collaborative Literacy programs (Making Meaning and Early Reading) as they become available.

How is ClassView Used? (Entering and Collecting Data) The “Class Setup” page is where the teacher adds student information to setup her class. Once the student information is entered, the app will create any relevant forms for each student.

How is ClassView Used? (Entering and Collecting Data) The teacher selects the assessment she wants to complete using the navigation menu.

How is ClassView Used? (Entering and Collecting Data) Once the assessment form is selected, the teacher fills in the form by tapping selected options in a rubric or typing anecdotal records into text boxes.

How is ClassView Used? (Entering and Collecting Data) Data from the relevant forms will be aggregated into the appropriate class and individual record sheets.

How is ClassView Used? (Viewing and Sharing Data) The “Student Profile” page allows for a quick view into student performance. The teacher can access any assessments relevant to a particular student from the “Student Profile”. The “Reports” section of the application provides access to the information that would be recorded on the individual and class record sheets included in the Assessment Resource Book. In addition, “special”* reports are being designed to aid in reporting data at the student, class, school, or district level. *Special reports – those that are designed specifically for ClassView

What is in ClassView? (Assessment Forms) Class Assessment Record (assess the writing, and sometimes the social performance, of the whole class; grades K–5) Conference Notes record (notes related to individual student conferences; grades K–5) Individual Writing Assessment record ( assessment of writing for a specific unit for each student; grades K–5) Student Self-assessment record (student form for assessing their own work – typically for each unit; grades 2–5) Social Skills Assessment Record ( records student classroom behavior 3 times a year; grades 1–5) Skill Practice Assessment (scored activities from the Student Skill Practice Book; grades 1–5) Grade-level Language Skills Assessment (tasks that identify deficits in students’ grammar, usage, and mechanics skills from the Skill Practice Teaching Guide; grades 1–5)

How is ClassView Used? (Assessment Forms) Class Assessment Record (assess the writing, and sometimes the social performance, of the whole class; grades K–5)

What will you see in ClassView? (Assessment Forms) Conference Notes record (notes related to individual student conferences; grades K–5)

What will you see in ClassView? (Assessment Forms) Individual Writing Assessment record ( assessment of writing for a specific unit for each student; grades K–5) Includes instructions for administering the assessment. Totals section automatically populates when data is entered in to the rubric.

What will you see in ClassView? (Assessment Forms) Individual Writing Assessment record ( assessment of writing for a specific unit for each student; grades K–5) Any notes entered in the “Next steps” text box in the unit’s Conference Notes record will automatically appear in the Reflection section of the Individual Writing Assessment. Samples of student work can be uploaded and attached to the record sheet. The student work will also appear in the Student Profile.

What will you see in ClassView? (Assessment Forms) Student Self-assessment record (student form for assessing their own work – typically for each unit; grades 2–5) Currently, ClassView is a teacher facing app, students do not have the ability to enter data. To fill out the Student Self-assessment, the teacher will have to transfer the data from the student’s print form into the app.

What will you see in ClassView? (Assessment Forms) Social Skills Assessment Record ( records student classroom behavior 3 times a year; grades 1–5) Social skills scores for each student are entered in an individual record accessed via the Student Portfolio or by tapping the student’s name on the Social Skills Assessment Record (found in “Reports”). Scores entered in the individual record sheet will automatically populate in the class record.

What will you see in ClassView? (Assessment Forms) Skill Practice Assessment (scored activities from the Student Skill Practice Book; grades 1–5) The teacher can record the scores for the Student Skill Practice Book activities, indicate which unit she taught them, and include any comments. The teacher has the option of including any scores entered here in the overall unit score in the Individual Writing Assessment.

What will you see in ClassView? (Assessment Forms) Grade-level Language Skills Assessment (tasks that identify deficits in students’ grammar, usage, and mechanics skills from the Skill Practice Teaching Guide; grades 1–5)

What you should know. (Frequently Asked Questions) For answers to frequently asked questions about DSC ClassView see the “DSC Internal BW2e FAQ” Google doc. Q Will ClassView feed directly into district assessment databases? A Not at this time. Our goal with the initial release of the app is to provide the teacher with a way of downloading relevant data into a spreadsheet from which she can enter or upload data into her district’s database.
