When is it necessary for citizens to rebel against their government?

Loyalists (aka Tories) Americans who remained loyal to Britain Patriots (aka Whigs) Americans who Believed the colonies had the right to govern themselves Loyalists (aka Tories) Americans who remained loyal to Britain

5.2 – What happened before 1763? Population grows- 50, 000 to 1 million- why? land was cheap religious tolerance many economic opportunities British allow colonies to govern themselves Very attractive to settlers

each colony elected its own assembly that passed laws and created and collected taxes.

Why was there conflict in the Ohio Valley? England & France had fought colonial wars before The English were moving west into the Ohio Valley but the French had already claimed this area!

What was the French & Indian War? Governor of VA sends militia to drive French out War: 1754- 1763 George Washington fought with the British against the French (& their Indian allies) British capture Canada in 1759 Britain wins! France gives up Canada to Britain

What was the Quartering Act? Colonists unhappy over another law passed by Parliament in 1765 – the Quartering Act. law ordered the colonists to provide British soldiers with quarters, or housing give them candles, food, beverages and other items of comfort NY colonists refused to approve funds for this British government reacted by refusing to let NY Assembly meet again until it agreed to obey the Quartering Act.
