Lord of the Flies Chapter 12

Chapter 12 Summary Ralph hides in the jungle, wounded, thinking about the chaos on the island. Ralph comes across the “Lord of the Flies” – he knocks it to the ground and takes the stake as a weapon. Ralph sneaks to Castle Rock and speaks to Samneric – they give him food and tell him Jack’s plan but refuse to join Ralph for fear of Roger and Jack Samneric tell Ralph that Jack plans to hunt him tomorrow and that Roger has sharpened a stick at both ends. Ralph hides in a deep thicket and falls asleep. In the morning, Ralph hears Jack and Roger torturing a twin to find out about Ralph’s location.

Chapter 12 Summary Jack’s tribe roll boulders into the thicket but it is too dense. Some savages try to get through the thicket but Ralph stabs one of them. Ralph then smells smoke and realizes that Jack has set the jungle on fire. Ralph abandons his hiding place and fights his way past the hunters. Ralph finally comes out of the jungle onto the beach.

Chapter 12 Summary Ralph looks up to see a naval officer with a large military vessel behind him docked on the beach front. The officer tells Ralph that the ship saw the fire. The hunters chasing Ralph explode onto the beach and see the officer. The officers assumes the boys have been up to “fun and games”. The officer learns what has happened and scolds the boys for their behavior. Ralph begins to cry and the naval officer turns his back to allow the boys to regain their composure.
