2. Chapter 6 Title: “Beast from the Air”
What is it?
The pilot and his parachute
Sam and Eric find it and think it is the “beastie”
They return to the others to report what they have seen
What do they say?
“We saw the beast” (pg 99)
“We’ve seen the beast with our own eyes” (pg 100)
Describe it as furry, something moving behind its head, wings, it sat up, eyes, teeth, claws, the beast followed them.
Golding is exploring how FEAR affects the MIND
Fear and evil rest in the same place in our souls

3. How do the boys react to Sam and Eric?
Jack wants to: hunt and kill it
Loses his temper and acts like a dictator
Ralph is concerned about: littluns and the fire
Assigns Piggy to stay with the littluns
Piggy is: hesitant and scared
Thinks they should stay where they are and the beast won’t come to the beach

4. The search is on… Where do they go look for the beast?
Through the jungle to the castle
Why is it called a castle?
There was a ledge that extended out into the sea
There was a tall rock that formed a bastion (fortification)
Ralph vs Jack
Jack: great place for a fort, starts playing games
Ralph: rotten, wants to go back up the mountain, fire, look for the beast
Has trouble getting the boys to do what he wants
Clear now that Ralph has just about lost control of the group

5. Chapter 6 Title: “Shadows and Tall Trees”
Boys start heading back toward the mountain
Ralph is thinking about: how dirty the boys have gotten, new normal
What does he want?
To cut his hair
To shower
To wash his clothes
What do all these represent?
Civilization

6. The Hunt Roger discovers fresh pig droppings so they begin to hunt.
What does Ralph do?
He joins the hunt
He spears the pig’s nose
He is excited about it
Why does Golding have Ralph participate in and enjoy the hunt?
Seeds of violence are in all of us
The urge to kill is in all of us
Man is basically evil

7. Pig Killing Game What do they do?
They surround Robert and pretend to he’s a pig
They hit him with spears
Jack brandishes a knife
Even Ralph tries to get in and hurt him
They chant “Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!”
What does Jack suggest at the end?
To play the game again, but use a littlun
The kids laugh

8. Another conflict – Ralph vs Jack
A decision needs to be made – continue on or go back to Piggy
Simon offers to go back through the jungle – at night
Ralph: All should go back
Jack: Continue on to the mountain
What question does Ralph ask Jack?
“Why do you hate me?”
What is decided at the end? Who continues?
Ralph and Jack and Roger go up the mountain
The rest go back to the beach
Do they see the beast? What is their reaction?
They drop their spears and run
