1 Lord of the Flies Final Test Review

2 Main Characters Ralph: Jack: Simon: Piggy: Roger:
leader of society/civilization savage, hunter, rules with scare tactics deep thinker, kind to all, sensitive logical, smart, (how does he die??) evil, satanic

3 Major Symbols Conch: Fire: Face Paint: Scar:
order, democracy, authority, ability to speak hope, desire to be rescued savagery, inner evil/savage within boys, mask to hide behind destruction-where plane crashed

4 Plot questions to consider/discuss
Why is Ralph chosen as the leader of the tribe? Who has the least respect for the conch? Identify the littlun with the mulberry birth mark. What is the difference between Ralph’s response and Jack’s response when the boys first talk of a beastie? What is the difference in their approach to treating the littluns? Who is the character the realizes that the “beast” is really the evil within the boys?

5 Major Themes Man is inherently evil:
Think about how the fear within the boys starts to take over Think about how most of the boys begin to act like savages Problems in society attributed to problems in people: Think about the problems they encounter (conflict) How are the “people problems” similar to the “society problems”

6 Major Themes Cont. Power of fear, especially the unknown
Who/What are the boys scared of What does this make them become? Civilization vs. Savagery Identify the two sides

7 Characterization Be able to read a quote/passage and understand what is being revealed about a character. 1. What does the following quote reveal about Jack? "I've got the conch. Ralph thinks you’re cowards, running away from the boar and the beast. And that's not all." pg 126 2. Read the following quote: "We got no fire on the mountain. But what's wrong with a fire down here? A fire could be built on them rocks. On the sand, even. We'd make smoke just the same." In this quote, how is Piggy indirectly characterized?

8 Characterization Direct: specifically tells the reader the qualities of a character. “fair hair” = Ralph is blond. Indirect: clues as to who the person is based on how he acts or what others say about him “Shut up, Fatty!” = Jack is bossy/mean Hint: Use what you already know about the character to help you choose a logical answer

9 Identify Figurative Language Simile, Metaphor, Personification
“The squirrel leapt on the wings of the wind and clung to another standing tree, eating downwards.” “The beach between the palm terrace and the water was a thin stick.” “The sandy edge of the pool loomed up like a hillside.” *Be prepared to explain why figurative language is used-think beyond the image
