Lord of the Flies CHAPTERS 4 AND 5

CONFLICT between Ralph and Jack widens – Why?? Jack continues to obsess over hunting He “forces” the choir boys to leave the fire and join the hunt They miss the ship passing because of no fire He hits Piggy and breaks his specs

Littluns make up about ½ the population of the island What are they like? They are little kids – playing in the sand, building castles They are scared – have nightmares Why does Golding include them? They represent the weakest in society, those that need others to care for them

Roger – one of Jack’s hunters What does he do to the littlun Henry? He throws rocks at him Why doesn’t he actually hit Henry? He still feels the pressure of the rules of the “old world” He still feels that pull that he might get in trouble if he hits a little one

Chapter 4 Title: “Painted Face and Long Hair” “Painted Faces” reflects what? Jack painting his face before hunting Act of donning a mask or painting a face historically interpreted as a way to hide one’s true nature People committing violent acts often hid their faces Examples? What is Jack able to do after painting his face? Kill a pig

Civilization is eroding in these chapters Painted faces – long and matted hair – killing of the pig – Jack attacking Piggy Assembly – how is this shown? Unruly boys Hard to control Ralph upset about ignoring essentials of civilized life Like what? Shelters Lavatory use Clean water

Idea of the “beastie” comes up again Littluns say they have seen and heard a hideous monster in the jungle What are the reactions of the older boys and how does this show their true nature? Ralph Democratic approach Vote it out of existence Piggy Scientific approach Logically and scientifically it cannot exist Jack Dictatorial approach Order boys to put up with their fear and get over, don’t be “cry-babies” Says they will hunt and kill it Simon Only one who really gets what the beastie is – not a monster outside but rather inside the boys themselves Suggests evil exists within the boys
