Adverbs They add to the verbs!

Describe This Verb Think of as many words as you can to describe the verb in this sentence: The girl sang. ex: The girl sang beautifully!

What do Adverbs Describe? An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. The suffix –ly usually indicates adverbs: happily, beautifully Examples: Adverb modifying a verb: The mother tenderly moved the pup. Adverb modifying an adjective: A very kind woman helped me. Adverb modifying another adverb: The males hunt extremely well.

What Questions Do they Answer? Adverbs describe where something is, when something was done, how was it done, and to what extent it was done. Where? When? How? To What Extent? Put the packages there. We held the party outside. He lives nearby. I looked inside. I will meet you later. Grandma is coming today. Janice played yesterday. The message arrived early. The elephant moved awkwardly. The shortstop runs fast. The musician performed perfectly. The dancers moved gracefully. Janet was completely honest. Lucy seems very upset. Amy fully agrees with me. I am totally opposed to it.

Find the Adverb! Find the adverb that is modifying the underlined word. A double layer of fur effectively covers a wolf. The underfur grows very thick in the cold months. An outer layer fully repels snow and water. A wolf often lies near trees or rocks during a storm. This location shelters it very effectively from wind.

Write Your Own Adverb! Write an adverb to fill the blank: The dog barked _________. The children _________ skipped. The _________ happy girl smiled. The boys _________ excitedly headed for the bus.

Let’s Review!
