1 Learning the parts of a sentence through Sentence Diagramming

5 1. Determine the subject and predicate (verb). 2. Are there any compound subjects and predicates (verbs)? 3. Make your basic diagram. 4. Enter the words for steps 1 and/or 2 in the appropriate line. 5. Dogs and seals bark and growl.

7  Adjective- describes a noun ◦ Answers the questions which one, how many, what kind  Adverb- describes verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. ◦ Answers the questions how, when, where, to what extent

9  The large dogs are growling menacingly. Label the subj. and pred. Label the adj. and adv.  The large dogs are growling menacingly.

10  The cute baby seals are barking playfully.  The gigantic male seals are barking forebodingly.

11  The energetic children ran fast and played nearby.  The watchful teachers and administrators are calling loudly and clapping.

12  Predicate Nominative--- renames the subject– but is after the verb  That tall thin dog is a saluki.  Predicate adjective--- describes the subject but is after the verb  A saluki is very swift.

13  The sky looked threatening.  People became nervous.  The chances for a major winter storm were excellent.  The roads became icy in early evening.  The snow plows remained busy all day.

14  Blizzards are dangerous storms.  Accumulations are the measurements of snow in inches.  The outdoors became children’s playgrounds.  Snacks of the day were hot chocolate and popcorn.  The winter storm warnings were only memories.

16  Pick two of the following three 1. The sky looked threatening. 2. People became nervous. 3. The chances were excellent. Pick one of the following two 1. The curvy roads became extremely icy. 2. The snow plows remained busy all day. (Hint: Adjectives and adverbs are included.)

17  Blizzards are dangerous storms.  The chilly outdoors became children’s playgrounds.  Favorite snacks were warm hot chocolate and salty popcorn.  The winter storm warnings were only bitter memories.

18  Copy the following sentence on loose leaf:  The winter sun looked very pale and unusually distant.  Underline the subject once.  Underline the predicate (verb) twice.

19  Label the 1 conjunction.  Label the 4 adjectives ( answers the questions which one, how many, what kind) and articles  Label the 2 predicate adjectives (describes the subject but is located after the verb)  Label the 2 adverbs ( answers the questions how, when, where, to what extent)

20  Each word in the sentence should be labeled at this time.  Under the sentence draw this:  1. enter the subject before the vertical line and the predicate after the vertical line.

21  2. Are there any adjectives that describe the subject? (yes….. two)  Add those to your diagram like this:

22 You have a compound (2) Predicate adjective. Add your sideways house after the verb Enter the words you identified as your predicate adjectives in the blanks.

23  Where does the conjunction go?  What do the adverb lines look like?  Add them under the words your adverbs describe.
