TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS PHRASAL VERBS

TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE Answer the following questions: What did you write? What did you make? What did you buy?

TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE Answer the following questions: What did you sleep? What did you go? What did you come?

TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE The second list of questions are all strange and can’t be answered. That’s because the verbs in this second group are verbs that do not act on anything. Thus, you can see that there are two kinds of verbs. The first one is transitive verb. It is a verb which needs an object and the second one is an intransitive verb that does not need an object.

TEST YOURSELF Decide if the verbs are intransitive or transitive.

TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE There are also verbs that are classified either as transitive or intransitive. Look at the examples: I eat an egg everyday. I eat every morning. She left us last night. She left last night.

TEST YOURSELF Greg opened the newspaper. I can read it later. Don’t worry. I usually stay at home. It is advisable to wash your hand before eating. Samantha can bake at any time When I’m tired, I complain She ended the conversation The athlete hit the ball My dog licked my face

PHRASAL VERB While most verbs are single words, some are phrasal: they contain two words. In phrasal verbs, the first word is a verb and the second word is called a particle. Here are some examples: She looked up (research) the answer. We will just drop off (deliver) the files. The professor pointed out (identify) the correct answer.

PHRASAL VERB The verb of the phrasal verb can be separated from its particle. However, if the direct object is pronoun, it cannot be separated. She looked up the answer. She looked the answer up. She looked it up. *She looked up it.

NON SEPARABLE There are also phrasal verbs that cannot be separated regardless of noun or pronoun. The teacher called on Ali * The teacher called Ali on Sue got over her cold last night. *Sue got her over cold last night
