1. PHRASAL VERBS
We have worked on this many times. Remember that a phrasal verb is made up of a verb + a particle

2. A particle is a word used as an adverb or
preposition which ends up giving the verb
a different meaning. Look at this example:
PICK AT= eat without enthusiasm
PICK ON= tease
PICK OUT= choose
PICK UP= get, buy

3. SEPARABLE AND NONSEPARABLE PHRASAL VERBS
Some are NONSEPARABLE therefore, the noun or pronoun always follows the particle
Like:
Run into, call for, come across, come from, go on, look into, turn out.
I can say: I ran into Juan yesterday
But CANNOT say: I ran Juan into.

4. SEPARABLE In these cases, a noun object can come after the particle.
For example: Luis cut up the steak
Or Luis cut it up OR Luis cut the steak up.
Some separable phrasal verbs are:
Burn off, take off, take out, whip up, wake up, put on, throw out, point out, think over

5. THREE-WORD PHRASAL VERBS
These consist of a verb+a particle+a preposition. They are nonseparable and the noun or pronoun always comes after the phrasal verb.
Catch up on, get on with, run out of, feel up to, drop out of, get away with, come up with.
The doctor says you must cut down on sweets.
