MLA FORMAT Get out a piece of paper for NOTES MLA format is how we correctly set up our essays AND how we correctly give credit to information we use in our essays and papers. You will be using MLA format for all of your high school English essays and papers – so take GREAT notes and KEEP THEM FOREVER 

MLA Page Layout

MLA General Guidelines Type on white 8.5” x 11” paper Double-space everything Use 12 pt. Times New Roman font (or similar font) Set all margins to 1 inch on all sides Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch Header with page numbers in the upper right corner for every page.

First Page No Title Page In the upper left corner of the 1st page, list your name, your instructor’s name, the course, and date Center the paper’s title (use standard caps but no underlining, italics, quote or bold) Create a header in the upper right corner at half inch from the top and one inch from the right of the page (include your last name and page number) DO NOT PUT “page, p. pg.” – JUST THE NUMBER! Make sure that each page has a new number!

Example of First Page

MLA Format MLA Format Whenever we use information that is not our own in a paper, we must give credit to the author. We do this using MLA format. In MLA format we will have both in text citations (also known as parenthetical citations) and a Works Cited page. The in text citations are found within the body of our paragraph and are usually the author and the page number that we found the information from. The Works Cited page is the last page of our essay or paper and is a list of all the sources that we used in our paper.

MLA Format Works Cited Page Breakdown for an article: Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article/Chapter.” Title of Book. Edition. First Name Last Name (Of author of the chapter). Place of Publication: Publisher Name, Date. Coben, Harlan. “The Undercover Parent.” Nytimes.com, New York Times. 16 Mar. 2008. In text citation: “Blah blah blah blah….” (Coben 4). Hanging indent
