“The Violinist Analogy” Pro Choice Argument “The Violinist Analogy”

Once upon a time, a man was walking across a road

He was hit by a car!!

He was taken to hospital…

When he awoke, on the bed next to him…

Was a patient, and he was attached to him, via a tube in both their stomachs…!

The Doctor said that the other patient was a world famous violinist, and needed a kidney transplant-the use of your kidney was keeping him alive.

But, he said, it would only be for about 6 to 9 months, until a donor was found. Until then, you would only have limited mobility, and need to eat and rest more, as he was using your vital organs to stay alive.

The Analogy “Car Accident” = Violinist = “Accident” victim = Getting pregnant Growing foetus Pregnant woman

Issues raised Is this scenario fair? Would you allow your organs to be used in such a way? What is the key issue here?

This is an example of a “pro choice” argument, arguing that the woman has the right to decide what happens to her own body.

The Violinist Analogy Is this argument convincing? Explain why some would agree with this and include the strengths of the argument. By pointing out the weaknesses of this argument, show why some would disagree with this.
