5 The Nature of Abortion and its Legislation
The main question in the topic of abortion is “when does life begin” this is because nobody would say that killing an egg or sperm is murder but everyone would see the killing of a new born baby as murder. At some point between these two stages the killing of the cells, foestus, embryo, baby becomes wrong. When does this happen? In the next few slides you will have a chance to consider when you think life begins.

6 WARNING! For this module we will be looking at the issue of abortion and the issues surround it. Abortion provokes very strong views from people which you may not agree however, all opinions will be respected by everyone. You must also remember that you do not know all the issues that are going on in people’s lives so if you do have an opinion try not to offend anyone. If any of the issues we come across do effect you, there are people for you to talk to.

32 When does life begin?

33 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” Jeremiah 1:5
“So God created human beings, making them to be like himself.” Genesis 1:27 “Do not murder.” Exodus 20:13

34 1.Can you deduce for yourselves what the general Christian attitude might be to abortion?
2. Though all Christians follow and have belief in the Bible, do you think all Christians have the same values? 3. Do you think all Christians have an absolute or relative standpoint on abortion?

35 Conception – when the sperm and egg meet and the cells begin to grow and divide?
When the foetus looks human? When the foetus can feel? When the brain has developed? When the foetus is viable (could survive if it was born prematurely)? When the child is born? At another time?

36 When do you think life begins?

37 Development of a foetus

38 The Nature of Abortion and its Legislation
Read “abortion Rights and “Pro Life” When do you think that life begins? explain your answer. Give three reasons to support the “Pro-Choice” point of view. Give 4 reasons to support the “Pro Life” point of view. “abortion is murder” Do you agree? Give reasons to support your answer (3 marks) Why would some people disagree with you (3 marks)

39 “The Violinist Analogy”
Pro Choice Argument “The Violinist Analogy”

40 Once upon a time, a man was walking across a road

41 He was hit by a car!!

42 He was taken to hospital…

43 When he awoke, on the bed next to him…

44 Was a patient, and he was attached to him, via a tube in both their stomachs…!

45 The Doctor said that the other patient was a world famous violinist, and needed a kidney transplant-the use of your kidney was keeping him alive.

46 But, he said, it would only be for about 6 to 9 months, until a donor was found. Until then, you would only have limited mobility, and need to eat and rest more, as he was using your vital organs to stay alive.

47 The Analogy “Car Accident” = Violinist = “Accident” victim =
Getting pregnant Growing foetus Pregnant woman

48 Issues raised Is this scenario fair?
Would you allow your organs to be used in such a way? What is the key issue here?

49 This is an example of a “pro choice” argument, arguing that the woman has the right to decide what happens to her own body.

50 The Violinist Analogy Is this argument convincing?
Explain why some would agree with this and include the strengths of the argument. By pointing out the weaknesses of this argument, show why some would disagree with this.

52 The number of abortions carried out in England and Wales rose by 3
The number of abortions carried out in England and Wales rose by 3.9% to 193,700 in 2006. There was also a rise in the under-16 abortion rate, to 3.9 per 1,000 women, and among under-18s to 18.2 per 1,000. Abortion has been increasing since it was legalised 40 years ago - there were 22,000 legal terminations in 1968. Three out of ten terminations were carried out using an "abortion pill" - up from 24% of the total in 2005. Some 89% of abortions were carried out at under 13 weeks gestation, with 68% carried out in the first ten weeks of a pregnancy. Two thousands abortions - 1% of the total - were carried out on the grounds that the child would be born disabled. a higher percentage of abortions are taking place at an early stage - almost two-thirds under 10 weeks gestation and most under 13 weeks.

53 In 2011, for women resident in England and Wales: •    The total number of abortions was 189,931 •    The abortion rate was highest at 33 per 1,000 for women aged 20, the same as in 2010 and in •    The under-16 abortion rate was 3.4 per 1,000 women and the under-18 rate was 15.0 per 1,000 women •    96% of abortions were funded by the NHS.  •    91% of abortions were carried out at under 13 weeks gestation.  78% were at under 10 weeks •    Medical abortions accounted for 47% of the total •    2,307 abortions (1%) were carried out under ground E (risk that the child would be born handicapped).
