Primary and Secondary Storage Explained

Primary and Secondary Storage ICT systems need to store programs and data and this storage can be either in: Primary storage – in chips inside the computer Secondary storage (or backup storage) outside the computer

Primary Storage Two types of primary storage 1. ROM (Read Only Memory) 2. RAM (Random Access Memory) With both types of primary storage the programs and data are stored on chips and are available immediately by the central processing unit They both plug into the mother-board

research Time - RAM What is RAM? What is it used for? Is it volatile memory? What does this mean? What sizes of RAM are often available in a laptop?

Research time - ROM What is ROM? What is it used for? Is it volatile memory?

Secondary Storage Secondary storage is outside the computer (except for the hard disk) Hard disk (also includes RAID) CD R, CD RW, DVD R, DVD RW Memory Stick SD Card Magnetic tape Cloud storage (online servers)
