1 Parts of a Computer

2 Parts of a Computer Today’s lesson you will cover:
The main parts of a computer system The function of each of those parts

3 Computer Structure A computer is made of many different parts that are linked together. Each part has a defined function within the computer.

4 Main parts CPU. HDD. RAM. ROM. Input Devices. Output Devices.
Backing Storage.

5 CPU CPU stands for Central Processing Unit.
It is the Brain of the computer and carries out software instructions. Task: Find examples of different types of CPU. How is the speed of the CPU measured?

6 HDD HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive.
It stores everything on your computer, from the Operating System, to the Programs, to your Documents and Pictures. It is not wiped when you switch the power off. How is the size of an HDD measured?

7 RAM and ROM RAM stands for Random Access Memory.
RAM is the part of the computer that temporarily stores the instructions that the computer is running, and the data it is processing. When a computer is in use, its RAM will contain… The operating system software The application software currently being used Any data that is being processed ROM stands for Read Only Memory. (ROM) is used in most computers to hold a small, special piece of software: the 'boot up' program. This software runs when the computer is switched on or 'boots up'. The software checks the computer’s hardware and then loads the operating system. RAM is called Volatile Memory, it forgets things when switched off ROM is non volatile, what does this mean?

8 Input and Output Devices
You should know what Input and Output devices are! Your task is to find as many Input and Output devices as possible in the time allowed. Create a Word table listing the device, whether it is Input or Output, and describing how it is used. Look at assistive technologies used by disabled people to help them use computers.

9 Backing storage Secondary storage (sometimes called backing storage) is the name for all of the devices (apart from ROM and RAM) that can store data in a computer system. A hard drive, a CD-ROM, a floppy disc and a USB memory stick are all examples of secondary storage devices. Is Backing Storage Volatile or Non Volatile?

10 Test your learning Explain Volatile Memory? Name 2 output devices?
What does CPU stand for? What is measured in Hertz? Which is bigger, 1 Gigabyte or 1 Terabyte?
