Assessing and Reviewing

Our Challenge; (aim of this module) When we run a workshop or presentation how do we go about assessing whether learning has occurred and reviewing if planning, preparation and delivery was effective ?

Firstly, To understand how to assess if learning has occurred we must understand how to identify learning? What identifies when learning has taken place?

Scenarios that might help; 1. 1.You teach a young person to throw a ball 2. 2.You have a discussion about sportsmanship with a teenage male sportsman

“Originally I had learnt about the VARK learning styles concept at a SPARC workshop. Several years later having worked full time as a coach I finally came to a point where I had figured out exactly how and when to, and when not to apply learning preference theory and to what extent. At this point of time I believed I understood the concept.”

Nature of Presentations Group actively takes part in the learning process without targeting specific or identical outcomes. The group owns the problem and creates the solution or potential solutions. Group actively takes part in learning process whilst being guided towards specific learning outcomes Specific information or content is presented Minimal interaction

Your challenge; How do we assess that learning has taken place in the generalised 3 styles of: seminar or lecture/workshop/facilitation? Paraphrase- what key actions would we need to perform in the three styles to check learning has taken place?

Reviewing Techniques When facilitating a session it is very important to review the process because this highlights that learning has occurred (for both the participant and the facilitator). Recap the issue/problem/topic/session objectives Highlight the process/journey Summarise the conclusion Decide how to improve in the future

Review of Workshops Following the conclusion of a workshop, the facilitator should review how effective they were in (using the process on the previous slide): Helping the participants learn Planning, preparation, management and administration Delivering the workshop (use of techniques, variation of style etc)

Review can be performed in a variety of ways: Formal or informal Presented or facilitated Self, participant, peer/expert review Review Approaches

On your own: 1. 1.Write down the approach that you would use if you were the facilitator of this module to: assess what participants had learnt review delivery of the module Outline a tool (e.g. write down the questions you might ask in a questionnaire or the plan for a facilitated feedback session, etc) you would use to review the delivery of this module

If you want recognition for completing facilitator training with your organisation: Following this module you should negotiate the process you need to follow to: 1. 1.Provide evidence of completion of all required facilitator training workshops 2. 2.Develop a plan for your own workshop, implement and review the workshop and provide relevant evidence to your organisation that you have completed this to the required standards.
