Xbox Kinect (Microsoft) Motion Controls 2006 2010 2016 Nintendo Wii The first motion controller was the power glove. (Not really). The motion controller that really started the motion controller stage of gaming was with the Wii. The Wii’s controller was a rectangle that used a combination of accelerometers and infrared detection to sense itself in a 3D space. The remote sent out LED that a sensor bar would pick up and interpreted these movements as actions in the game. The Wii remote also had a port at the bottom where a Nunchuk unit could be connected. This add-on contained a joystick and an accelerometer. The player could be playing a game and using a swinging Motion like an actual tennis player. The game would receive this input and cause the avatar in the game to hit The ball in the game. The Wii also Wasn't only limited to the controller. Players could also use a Wii balance board this device will take the input of a players balance based on their stance and Add a new experience to The game that they were playing. Xbox Kinect (Microsoft) The next big development in motion controls was the Xbox Kinect. This device instead of being a controller was a sensor that actually read the person standing in front of the TV and the player was the controller. The Device has an infrared projector and camera. Along with a microchip to track the movement of objects and individuals in 3D. The device had a microphone built in as well so the player can use voice commands to control the console the Kinect is connected to. While the device is more advanced than the Wii remote there where still a few draw backs. The Sensor a can “See” the players but sometimes will not receive the player's movements. To add to this the sensor required a large area of space so the sensor doesn't get “Distracted” by other objects that can be detected. The Kinect isn't only limited to the Xbox 360 and the Xbox one console. A person can get the Kinect running on a computer and can then program voice commands and movements into certain games to enhance a players experience. Oculus Rift The newest development in Motion controls is the Oculus Rift. This device is a headset that a player puts on their head and gives a sense of virtual reality. Now there are many devices that are a competition to the Oculus Rift but Oculus was the first company to thoroughly develop a headset for a VR experience. Though VR has a strong presence in computer gaming. Microsoft and Sony have developed their own headset to be used on the Xbox and PlayStation. The headset gives off IR LED lights that are read by a sensor and using these lights determine the position that a user's head is in. The sensor feeds data into a driver that is installed on a person computer that interprets the movement to movement in the game. The game is then streamed into the user's headset giving the viral reality experience. Though the Oculus is mainly pushed towards gaming media outlets are finding ways to use the rift. Some videos on YouTube have 360 videos where a person can look at the video while it is playing.
