Starter Task One: Complete the gapped worksheet, identifying which description matches the correct key word. Task Two: Briefly answer the questions outlined on the gapped task sheet as a recap from the last lesson. Work independently. You have 10 minutes.

INFO 3: Use of ICT In The Digital World Topic 10: Introducing Large ICT Systems in Organisations (Backup & Recovery) Electronic Chapter: 12

Objectives At the end of the lesson, students should be able to: - 1. Recap over what a backup and recovery strategy is 2. Explain what is meant by Disaster recovery and contingency planning 3. Discuss the options for recovery and identify their advantages and disadvantages

Exam Practice All organisations operating large scale systems need to be prepared in case a disaster occurs. Explain what an organisation should consider to prepare for a possible disaster and what recovery options may be available to it. (15 marks, June 2013)

Assessment Objectives (Outcome) Grade E/D Standard: Be able to explain the purpose of a backup and recovery strategy. Achieve more than 40% of the exam style question. Grade C/B Standard: Be able to explain what is meant by Disaster recovery and contingency planning, as well as make reference to what information can be found within each plan. Achieve 60% or more of the exam style question. Grade A Standard: Be able to discuss the various options for recovery and justify the appropriateness of each option by making reference to their advantages and disadvantages. Achieve 80% or more in the exam style questions.

Flipped Learning… You were asked to prepare some notes on the following key points. (Get these out) Risk Analysis Disaster Recovery Contingency Planning and the contents of a contingency plan Different options for recovery.

Flipped Learning Pt 1… Your teacher will put you into pairs. Each pair will be allocated a piece of paper and some pens. Using your own knowledge and research, build a mind map identifying key facts/information, based on the key areas you researched into. You have 10 minutes to demonstrate as much knowledge as possible for each key area.

Flipped Learning Pt 2… Your teacher will now pair you up with another pair, creating small groups of 4. As a group, share your knowledge and understanding from your mind maps, teaching each other about the key areas regarding backup and recovery. Using a different coloured pen, if you learned something new or identified a feature/characteristic that you have missed off, add this to your own mind map. You have 10 minutes to share and collaborate your findings in your small groups.

Backup & Recovery Strategy What is Risk Analysis? - ??? A Risk Analysis involves: 1. Identifying each element of an ICT System 2. Placing a value on that element 3. Identifying any threats to that element 4. Assessing the likelihood (or probability) of such threats occurring.

Contents of a contingency plan A contingency plan ensures that the organisation can continue to function if something was to happen. A contingency plan contains: Make notes….

Contents of a contingency plan (5 minutes) Activity 2 - Many organisations have no disaster recovery plan, those that do would find them ineffective in an emergency. Why do you think so many disaster recovery plans prove to be ineffective? Many organisations fail to test their disaster recovery plans why do you think that this is so?

Disaster Recovery & Contingency Planning (8 minutes) Disaster Avoidance – If organisations can put in place appropriate measures to minimise the likely hood of problems occurring this is called Disaster Avoidance. (make note) Activity 1 – Answer these questions in pairs: Give an example of a disaster caused deliberately and one caused by accident. Organisations keep an inventory of hardware and software explain what an inventory is and the reasons for keeping one. How can viruses be prevented? Describe the process of encryption. What is a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)?

Options for recovery Activity 3 - There are a number options available for recovery. For each of these options research and make notes on your findings: A hot site A cold site Reciprocal arrangements (10 minutes)

Options for recovery Continued Activity 4 – In activity 3, you researched into the following: A hot site A cold site Reciprocal arrangements Now research into the advantages and disadvantages of each. (10 minutes)

3 2 1 Summary 3-2-1 A hot site A cold site Reciprocal arrangements Briefly explain what the difference is between the following: A hot site A cold site Reciprocal arrangements 2 Explain the term risk analysis and give one example of what a risk analysis involves... 1 Explain what a contingency plan is and give one example of what you might expect to find within a contingency plan.
