Life Cycles of Frogs What is a Frog? A frog is an Amphibian. Amphibian means “double life.” They live the first part of its life in water. They live.
What is a life cycle? Does the baby frog look like the adult frog or do they look different? What are the stages in a frogs life cycle? Put your thinking.
13.What is an Amphibian? 1. One group of vertebrate animals is the amphibians 2 Vocabulary: amphibians A cold-blooded vertebrate animal that lays eggs.
Do you look the same as you did when you were younger? Or the same as your parents? Of course not! As you get older, you go through changes. Most living.

Animals and Plants Grow and Change CHAPTER 1 Vocabulary life cycle larva pupa tadpole dissolved salts seed coat seedling Did you know ? Silkworm is only one stage in the life cycle of the silkmoths. The silkmoth spends all its time feeding on mulberry leaves as it grows. Then it changes into the next stage of the life cycle. 8

Did you know ? The part of a popcorn that sticks between your teeth is the seed coat. 9

What are Some Animal Life Cycles? LESSON 1 What are Some Animal Life Cycles? Life Cycle of the Frog You will need picture cards Put the picture cards in sequence. Show how you think a frog changes as it grows. 1 2 Tell why you put your cards in the order you did. Science Skill When you sequence the cards, you show that happens first, next, and last. 10

How Animals Grow and Change ducks elephants The baby elephant and the duckling will grow up to look like their parents. Together, all the stages of an animal’s life from birth to death make up its life cycle. 11

How a Butterfly Grows 1 2 12 a cluster of eggs The butterfly is an insect that changes several times before it becomes an adult with colourful wings. The butterfly begins life as an egg. A larva grows inside the egg. Then it hatches and comes out. The larva eats plant leaves as it grows. 2 larva 12

3 4 5 13 pupa inside a cocoon The larva stops eating, weaves a cocoon around it self, and becomes a pupa. Inside the cocoon the pupa slowly changes into a butterfly. The butterfly comes out and flies away. Then the butterfly lays eggs and the life cycle beings again. 4 the butterfly comes out 5 adult butterfly 13

How a Frog Grows A frog is an amphibian. It changes many times before it becomes an adult frog. Frogs lay their eggs in the water. Young frogs, or tadpoles, hatch from the eggs. They have tails to swim and gills to breathe in water. Tadpoles eat, grow, and develop back legs. frog eggs 1 2 tadpole tadpole with back legs 3 14

Tadpoles keep changing Tadpoles keep changing. They grow front legs and develop two lungs to breathe air. Their tails get smaller little by little. When the tails disappear, tadpoles look like little frogs. The climb onto land and grow bigger. Then the frogs lay eggs and the life cycle beings again. Think About it 1. List in sequence the stages of the butterfly life cycle. 2. What body parts does a tadpole have that a frog does not have? What are their roles? 4 The front legs of a tadpole will grow and its tail will disappear little by little 5 adult frog 15

How Do the Plants Grow and Change LESSON 2 How Do the Plants Grow and Change What Plants Need You will need 2 potted plants cup of water chart pencil What happen to a plant? date Plant with no water Plant with water 1 Put both plants in a sunny place. Water the soil of only one plant. Predict what will happen. Science Skill When you observe plants, you use your senses of sight, touch, smell. Observe both plants every day for one week. Record your observations on the chart. 2 16

Flowers make fruits that hold seeds. What the Parts of a Plant Do Flowers make fruits that hold seeds. Leaves use light, air, water, and salts to make food for the plant A plant needs light, air, and water to grow. It also needs dissolved salts, or minerals, from the soil. When a plant gets what it needs, it can grow and change. Stems hold up the plant and move water and salt through it. What does each part of a plant do? Roots fix the plant and take in water and salts from the soil. 17

How Plants Grow from Seeds Seeds have different parts. Most seeds have a covering called a seed coat, Which protects the seed? The seed is made up of stored food and a tiny plant. The tiny plant uses the stored food to grow. When a seed gets water and warmth, it may germinate, or start to grow. First the roots grow down. Then a stem grows up. The young plant is called a seedling Seedling,4 days Seedling,15 days bean seed coat seed food stored tiny plant 18

Think About it 19 adult plant with seeds Seedling,45 days As the seedling grows, it changes. It makes more leaves and stems. When the plant is fully grown, its flowers make fruits that hold seeds. Think About it 1. What do plants need to grow? 2. What are the different parts of a seed? 19
