1 Metamorphosis

2 Metamorphosis Metamorphosis refers to the way that certain organisms develop, grow and change form. Metamorphosis means “change.”

3 Types of Metamorphosis
Incomplete Metamorphosis- 3 STAGES Complete Metamorphosis- 4 or 5 STAGES

4 Complete Metamorphosis Example: butterfly
Egg Larva Pupa Adult

5 Egg Female lays eggs.

6 Larva Larva hatch from the eggs. They do not look like adult insects. They usually have a worm- like shape. Caterpillars, maggots and grubs are all just the larval stages of insects. Larvae molt their skin several times and they grow slightly larger.

7 Pupa Larva make cocoons around themselves.
Larva don’t eat while they’re inside their cocoons. Their bodies develop into an adult shape with wings, legs, internal organs This change takes anywhere from 4 days to many months.

8 Adult Inside the cocoon larvae change into adults.
The adult will break out of the cocoon.

9 Incomplete Metamorphosis Grasshopper
Egg Nymph Adult

10 Egg A female insect lays eggs.
These eggs are often covered by a case which protects the eggs and holds them together.

11 Nymph Eggs hatch into nymphs.
Nymphs are similar to the adult but do not have wings. Nymphs eat the same food as the adult grasshopper. Nymphs shed or molt their exoskeletons (outer casing). They are replaced with larger ones as they grow.

12 Adult Insects stop molting when they reach their adult size.
They grow wings.

13 Frogs Frogs undergo a complete metamorphosis as well. (5 stages) Egg
Tadpole: lives in the water, breathes with gills, and has a tail. Tadpole with legs

14 Frogs Froglet: As the tadpole grows, lungs and legs form, and the gills and tail are absorbed into the body. Adult Frog: animal leaves the water and lives mainly on land, as a frog.
