English language Key skills for paper 1: 1) Identify four facts without being a muppet about it (4) 2) Analyse language using terms (metaphor, noun, etc.) (8) 3) Analyse structure using terms (circular narrative, paragraph, etc.) (8) 4) Make an argument (‘on the one hand this, on the other hand that’) (20) 5) Write to narrate or describe (40)

English language Key skills for paper 2: 1) Answer ‘true’ or ‘false’ without being a muppet about it (4) 2) Summarise the differences between two extracts (8) 3) Analyse language in one extract (12) 4) Compare language in two extracts (16) 5) Write a structured and persuasive piece of non-fiction (40)

Make your own language questions… Paper 1: Step 1: Read an extract from a novel. Step 2: Write a summary of what’s happened. Step 3: Write two paragraphs analysing language using terms. Step 4: Write two paragraphs analysing structure using terms. Step 5: Write two paragraphs arguing that one particular theme in the extract is the most important. Step 6: Write a short story based on the extract that you read.

Make your own language questions… Paper 2: Step 1: Read two broadsheet articles off the internet. Step 2: Summarise both. Step 3: Write two paragraphs analysing language from one of them. Step 4: Write two paragraphs comparing language used in both. Step 5: Write an article giving your opinion on the topic you’ve just read about.

English literature paper 1: Shakespeare and 19th Century Novel Key skills in both questions: Students need to make an argument in response to a question about a character or a theme, using terminology and referring to historical context. They should refer substantially to the extract given but should refer in some detail to the wider text. 30 marks for each question plus 4 for SPAG.

English literature paper 2: Modern prose and the poetry Modern prose: students are given a choice of two questions on a character or a theme. They should make an argument, analysing language, using terminology and referring to historical context. They are not given an extract so they need to know quotations. Poetry part one: Students are given one poem that they have studied and asked to compare it to another poem that is not printed on the paper, analysing language, using terminology and referring to historical context. They should know 2-3 quotations per poem. Poetry part 2: Students are asked a question about an unseen poem, and then asked briefly to compare it to a second unseen poem. They need to make an argument, analyse quotations and use terminology.

Texts Literature paper 1: 1h45m Romeo and Juliet and The Sign of the Four or A Christmas Carol or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Literature paper 2: 2h15m Blood Brothers or An Inspector Calls or The Curious Incident… and Conflict poetry and Unseen poetry.

Make your own literature question: How does [blah] present [blah]? Insert a writer and a theme or character above. Like so: How does Shakespeare present love? Or… How does Shakespeare present Romeo?

Make your own comparative literature question… Compare the presentation of [blah] in [blah] and a poem of your choice. Insert a theme and a poem above. Like so… Compare the presentation of war in Remains and a poem of your choice.
