Paper 1: Explorations in creative reading and writing- 1h 45 minutes. Pupils will have to answer four questions about a fiction extract and complete a piece of creative writing. This paper is 50% of the final grade.

Paper 2: Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives- 1h 45 minutes. Pupils will have to answer four questions about a non-fiction extract and complete a piece of transactional writing. This paper is 50% of the final grade.

How can I support my child with their learning? Give them a newspaper article and get them to select the five most important words and explain how they affect the reader Encourage your child to read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts each week (roughly twenty minutes a day). You could discuss- the story, key events and vocabulary used in the texts. Look at two newspaper articles of the same story and look at the differences in the way it has been reported. Create a set of flash cards with key exam question information on and test your child’s memory. Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19th Century novel- 1h 45 minutes. Pupils will be required to write in detail about an extract from the play/text and then to write about the play/text as a whole. We have chosen Romeo and Juliet and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This paper is 40% of the final grade.

Paper 2: Modern Prose and Poetry- 1h 45 minutes. Section A: pupils will answer one essay question on their studied modern prose; we have chosen Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Section B: pupils will answer one comparative question on one poem printed on the paper and one other poem from the anthology. Section C: pupils will answer one question on one unseen poem and one question comparing this poem with a second unseen poem This paper is 60% of the final grade.

How can I support my child with their learning? Encourage your child to discuss the plot and key characters in Lord of the Flies and A Christmas Carol. They can use the resources on BBC Bitesize to help them with this. Ask them to create mind maps about the characters and themes and add key quotations to the mind maps. Storyboard the text they have read- you can be really creative with this and use photography and the internet to create and find images. Discuss a range of poetry and the meanings of the poems. BBC Bitesize has great resources for this.
