2. GCSE ENGLISH ENGLISH LANGUAGE The Language course takes place over two years. It is split into Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3. Unit 1- Non-examination assessment Oracy Individual presentation and group discussion Unit 2- Exam reading and writing Unit 3 – Exam reading and writing ENGLISH LITERATURE The Literature course takes place over two years. It is split into Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3. Unit 1- Of Mice and Men and unseen poetry exam (2hours) Unit 2- Novel and Play study (Inspector Calls, Heroes, Blood Brothers, Pride and Prejudice) Unit 3- Non- examination Shakespeare essay and poetry essay

3. Task 1 (10%) /40 (year 10) Individual presentation, based on a WJEC set theme will take place in year 10. It is important that everyone attends school at this time. Pupils have one week to prepare the presentation and it should last between 5 and 7 minutes, including questions from the audience. Pupils can be grouped together (4-5 in group) and present to group and teachers. Audience members should ask questions and talk should be natural. Task 2 (10%) /40 (year 11) Responding and Interacting (Group Discussion) Pupils to have WJEC stimulus material a week before the task and may conduct their own research. The discussion should take around 10 minutes per group Unit 1: Oracy (20%)

Year 11 exam 2hours Section A: Reading 1hr Section B: Writing 1hr Section A: Pupils will be asked to read a selection of autobiography, biography, diaries, speeches, reportage, travel writing, literary journalism, high-quality reviews, and extracts from novels and short stories The exam will have a theme e.g Sport, Fashion, London and there may be texts such as advertisements, diagrams, lists, graphs, schedules and tables, which include written language that students may be questioned on. There is also an editing task focusing on understanding short passages at looking at word, sentence structure and text level. You will need to edit and select appropriate language. Unit 2: Description / Narration / Exposition

7. Year 11 exam 2hours Section A: Reading 1hr Section B: Writing 1hr Section B: Students must select one writing task from a choice of two that could be either description, narration or exposition. Candidates will be required to write one piece of extended writing, drawing upon reading materials in section A. This could include, biography, memoir, travel writing, food writing, diary, story and personal essays. Description: description of a place, setting the scene, decription of a character, a travel log. Narration: Telling event in chronological order, a story, biography, news report. Exposition: An essay that is investigative, explorative, argumentative, informative, expressing an opinion or idea. This section will also include one proofreading task focusing on writing accurately. In this short task, you will need to proofread and correct a brief text. 9. Year 11 exam 2hours Section A: Reading 1hr Section B: Writing 1hr Section A: Read a variety of texts including letters, emails, factsheets, leaflets, articles, reports, blogs, notices, guides, manuals, and digital texts with a thematic link. The text will include advertisements, diagrams, lists, graphs, schedules and tables. There will be a series of questions some will be long, some will be short, some will ask you to paraphrase, complete a cloze exercise or multiple choice. Unit 3: Argumentation, Persuasion and Instructional

12. Y ear 11 exam 2hours Section A: Reading 1hr Section B: Writing 1hr Section B: Students will be asked to complete two tasks one compulsory argumentation writing task and one compulsory persuasion writing task. You will need to show you can write for audience and purpose. You can drawing upon reading materials in section A where appropriate and adapting style to form and to real-life contexts in, for example, letters, articles, reviews, speeches, and so on. Half of the marks for this section will be awarded for communication and organisation(meaning, purpose, readers and structure) and the other half for writing accurately (language, grammar, punctuation and spelling). 15. English Literature Unit 1 35% Y ear 11 exam 2hours Section A: OMAM/TKAMB Section B: Unseen Poetry Students will need to analyse an extract from the novel and write about how the writer has presented the character or setting. They will then write an essay from a choice of two titles. Students will then writer an essay about the poems they read in the exam.

18. English Literature Unit 2 40% Y ear 11 exam 2hours Section A: Inspector calls/ Blood Brothers Section B: Heroes/ Pride and Prejudice Students will need to analyse an extract from the text and explain how the writer crafted the character/setting/theme. Students must then write an essay from a choice of two titles about the text.

19. Task 1 (year 10) Shakespeare thematic study Students study an entire Shakespeare play and have two hours to complete an essay on a chosen theme. Task 2 (year 10) Students study 15 poems thematically linked to Wales and Welsh culture. They complete a comparison essay on two poems studies. Students have spent the last 3 weeks preparing for another controlled assessment. Their best marks will be submitted. Unit 3: Non-examination essays

20. What to revise for Literature unit 1 Learn poetry terminology Annotating poems A quotation per character and theme from OMAM (learn around 10 quotes from the book that will link to characters and themes) Learn context of 1930s America

21. English Revision Session on Wednesday after school Throughout October and November there will targeted revision sessions on an invitation basis. Class revision sessions will be available in December.
