The Sculptural Human Form

LEARNING TARGETS: I can pose and solve artistic problems using the creative process. I can evaluate and adjust my works during the creation process. I can take creative risks in the production of art work. I can identify how an artist is influenced by culture and environment. I can create art that is meaningful to me.

Figural Sculpture Miniature Based on a person’s form. A large object made small

Michelangelo 1475-1564  Michelangelo was one of the major Renaissance artists, creating work both as a painter and a sculptor. He is best known for his realistic marble and stone carved sculptures (such as “The David”) and his ceiling painting of the Sistine Chapel. His works are highly realistic, detailed, and expressive of the human form.

Henry Moore 1898 –1986 Moore was an English artist and sculptor best known for his abstract monumental cast bronze sculptures which are located around the world as public works of art. His forms are usually abstractions of the human figure, typically depicting mother-and-child or reclining figures.

Compare Henry Moore’s reclining figure with child to Michelangelo’s ‘David’

(At least 2 sentences, proper grammar) ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

CREATIVITY Just a basic sculptural structure The artist’s message is either generic (not original), or hard to interpret The artist expresses the idea above through the figure: a personal expression, a story, an emotion The artist clearly expresses an idea/story/emotion in the artwork, and it is unique in the classroom TECHNIQUE Chosen techniques are inconsistent, not used successfully, pieces are poorly joined, unstable Techniques are mostly consistent in quality and pieces are joined and stay together, stable structure Consistent quality in chosen technique, pieces are joined together successfully to create stable and sturdy structure(s) Artist consistently and successfully uses techniques that are appropriate and successful for the specific piece(s) created. Options… Full body Must be able to stand or sit requiring both visual and physical balance

Bust– Only the shoulders up. This creates a larger more detailed option for the creation of a head, but has it’s own structural challenges – hollow yet stable and strong

Possibilities… Mask– Only the head. Must still be three-dimensional, but this would be a RELIEF scultpure. How can you make a mask with added details and make is strong enough to not break when lifted up?

Consider the challenges… Offer Solutions…
