Level 3 Media Kim and Lyndon By: Kimberley Gonzalez FILM POSTERS Level 3 Media Kim and Lyndon By: Kimberley Gonzalez

FILM POSTER: Film posters is the poster used to advertise a movie. In their origin they used to include significant scenes of the film or images of the main actors or their names; later the name of the director was added and sometimes a logo or representative image. The initial use of artistic illustrations was a certain variety of styles and accompanied by handwritten texts, timetables and advertising phrases, later they were replaced by photographic montages and digital image designs.   Film posters are designed to convey a message to viewers or the audience for the purpose of capturing, remembering and acting in a manner consistent with what is suggested by the poster itself, based on the predominance of a colour or the main characters.

Film poster number one: Is a 1999 American drama film directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball. This movie was released in North America on September 17. The film won best picture, best director, best actor. best original screenplay and best cinematography. American beauty was filmed on soundstages at warner Bros. Backlot in Burbank, California and at Hancock Park and Brentwood in Los Angeles. In this poster you can analyse the sensuality of the women’s body. It can be seen that’s a very subtle and delicate design but provocative and enticing. The rose you could understand that it is about love. In this poster they use warm colours and the first thing that you can see is the stomach of the women with her fingers on top along with the rose. In the poster you can see that the movie is aimed at an older audience because of the abundance of uncovered skin which has sexual connotations.

The typographer is very important because it gives us a very important clue about the film like the leading roles and the title but it also creates a sense of mystery. They say that roses are the predominant element throughout the film, because several scenes of the film are related to techniques of gardening and the title is related to a famous phrase foreshadowed by the American businessman.

Film poster number two: Name of the film: Avatar Avatar is a 21st century film made in the United States in 2009. The film is set in the 2154th century in the mid-XXII century. Avatar's development began in 1994, when Cameron wrote an 80-page script for the film. Shooting was supposed to start after Cameron's last film in 1997, for a planned release in 1999, but according to Cameron, the necessary technology was not yet available to achieve his vision of the film. Avatar was filmed in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China.

For the film poster we can see that the genre of the film is imaginary, science fiction, fantasy and adventures. They use dark colours and good contrasts between the blue, the faces and the sunset. Blue represents faith and heaven which is included within the conventions of a fantasy film industry. You can notice that the blue is prominent and is the colour associated to the film. The first thing that I think about when I see the poster, is that it is going to be about another world, another planet different from the one we know. There is a connection between the animated world and the real world. The two faces in the poster it’s because they are telling us that both of them are the main characters of the film. I find the title very clear and interesting.    The poster art copyright is believed to belong to the distributor of the film, 20th century fox the publisher of the film or the graphic artist.

Difference between both film posters: The difference between both posters is that American Beauty is very simple compared to Avatar that uses more colours and creativity. 21st century posters are characterized by creating a closer bond between the consumer and the poster. The films look for something that characterizes them in the market, reason why they use elements simple and easy to understand. It can be from modern illustration to shocking photos. Unlike the movie poster in the twentieth century, the new movie poster no longer seeks to be a political statement in itself. The poster now appeals to the curiosity of the viewer and if it has political content, the first thing it seeks is the impact and make the film a desirable product before a cultural product. The posters have evolved over the years but have always had the same sense of promotion. Before they used very traditional styles and now there are new fields. Using new styles of backgrounds, photography and slogans.
