DESIGN VENTURA

Placing design skills in a real world, business context via a user-led design challenge. Students compete for the chance to design a product that will be sold in the Design Museum Shop. Design Ventura is a national competition for secondary schools. It aims to give young people the opportunity to develop creative, enterprise and transferrable employability skills that they can use in life in and beyond school.

PROJECT AIMS Curriculum relevant project in real world context Respond to a live brief Increase skills, confidence and ambition of young people Raise aspirations Bringing partnerships between learners, industry and museum Real world context of working to a live brief for a real context – The Design Museum Shop. With the winning product made and sold Working in teams and celebrating success Live activities and online resources are supported by industry professionals from design and business

now at the start of the 8th year of the project: Over 47,000 students 1200 school groups from 700 school 131 volunteers from Deutsche Bank 161 Design volunteers 567 Teachers trained through CPD 0ver £7,500 raised for charity

700 schools have participated in Design Ventura since 2010

SUPPORT FOR RUNNING THE PROGRAMME CPD for teachers to extend their design practice. This can count towards credits for formal accreditation via the via Goldsmith’s Design Education MA. Experts Schools are supported by a community of business and design experts Visits and workshop State schools can come to the museum and participate workshop (first come first served basis) Website New website and free online resources; they can run the project at their own pace. Handling Collections - We provide a small sample of objects from the museum’s shop to help inform ideas to all teachers that attend a CPD session. Participation in Design Ventura and all supporting activities and resources are free to state schools

THE DESIGN VENTURA BRIEF Create a well-designed product to sell in the Design Museum Shop, that will retail at around £10 Winners see their idea made and on sale in the Design Museum Shop

KEY DATES July – August – Free Teacher CPD at the Design Museum and online 18 September - 20 October - we offer free workshops and visits to the Design Museum (Students get the chance to learn directly from design and business professionals in these sessions) 15 November - submission deadline for entries 8 December - Pitching event February 2018 - Celebration Event February – March 2018 - exhibition of top ten entries at the Design Museum

MUSEUM WORKSHOPS Supported by a volunteer industry expert Up to 30 students per workshop Led by a museum educator.

PITCHING EVENT The top ten state school teams will be invited to the Design Museum to pitch their idea to a panel of expert judges, including designer Sebastian Conran and the director of the Design Museum.

CELEBRATION EVENT The winners are announced at an awards evening in February 2018 and an exhibition of the top ten entries goes on public display at the Design Museum

PRODUCT LAUNCH The winning team will work with professional designers to develop their product and it will go on sale at the Design Museum in the summer. All proceeds from the sale of the winning product will go to a charity of the students’ choice.
