Steps to build a College Champions Program 1. define need 2. define goals 3. develop roles 4. create written plan 5. create promo materials 6. market your need 7. blast it out 8. carry on

YOU’RE THINKING I don’t have time to create a cohesive program of this nature My boss won’t let me have an intern College students are hard to find

STUDENTS ARE THINKING

Goals vs. Outcomes Goals Connect with 3 of 10 campuses in NC Host 1 event at each campus, 3 total Gain contact with an administrator and a professor on each campus Shift focus from registration #s, to relationship building (ultimate goal is registering, but how do we get them comfortable?) Outcomes Connected with 5 of 10 campuses in NC Hosted 10 events across all campuses Created 2+ contacts at all universities except 1 College Champions branding resulted in numerous intercampus referrals 3 interns Positive student and faculty feedback

1. DEFINE YOUR NEED 2. DEFINE GOALS You must determine your need for College Champions Any program wants/needs on the backburner? Any internal tasks on your “to-do” list for months?

3. DEVELOP COLLEGE CHAMPION ROLES VOLUNTEER SERVICE LEARNING INTERNSHIPS OTHER

ROLES CONTINUED Volunteer – using students to fulfill existing needs ROLES CONTINUED Volunteer – using students to fulfill existing needs. Students commit to participating in 2-4 activities each school year. Service Learning – specific classes would agree to use your organization as the focus of their projects. Internships –identity potential interns to help with internal administrative work. Other – if school/student could not commit to any of the above, keep the door open for all possibilities.

4. CREATE WRITTEN PLAN Overview Objectives Goals Scope. Fairs 4. CREATE WRITTEN PLAN Overview Objectives Goals Scope Fairs Civic Groups Associations Classroom Talks Focus Groups Campus Challenges Student Advocates Interns Calendar of Events Evaluation

5. CREATE PROMO MATERIALS focus on campus admins: -one pagers -graphics -step by step guide focus on students: -crafty brochures -powerful posters -engaging power points -”swag”

6. MARKET YOUR NEED Google is your friend Compile a spreadsheet of school staff contacts Federal Work Study Professional Development Public Affairs Service Learning Public Leadership Interdisciplinary Studies Programs related to your cause Courses that require internships Multicultural student organizations

Create content for email/phone pitch, websites and social media so your contacts have something to look at donatelifenc.org

6. MARKET YOUR NEED INTERNALLY Start by identifying contacts within your circle of trust – ask for introductions Look in database for anyone with a connection to colleges Work with partner organizations Reach out organically

7. Blast it out Ask for meetings Tour invites College info sessions Get to know staff- get to know students

8. CARRY ON Once you have interested parties, focus on -Recruitment (make sure it’s a good fit) -Onboarding (even if one-timer, make sure they feel part of the donation community) -Retention -Recognition Make sure to keep school’s communication team abreast of what’s happening Continuously monitor success

Wrote content for our blog, one of highest engaging post on our social media.

One time campus fair with student managing table. Resulted in new partnership with School of Health Sciences and grant opportunity. Semester long service project and homecoming participation.

Presentation to student group resulting in fundraiser, campus wide publication, and multiple student fairs.

One campus outreach event lead to 5 event invites, shout outs on social media from school’s page, and campus wide lunch and learn for all faculty and staff

SUMMARY 1. define need 2. define goals 3. develop roles 4. create written plan 5. create promo materials 6. market your need 7. blast it out 8. carry on

Set Goals Measure Impact Evaluate I want to bring on 5 new college champions this year Measure Impact Keep detailed records. How many events? How much time total did students give? Evaluate Total success! Maybe not totally but that’s ok.
