2 What is the Discovery Challenge?
A UW campus-wide, three-part event for graduate students and post-docs Part I: Seminar series November 2012 – April 2013 at the Institutes for Discovery Part II: Research symposium in May at the Institutes for Discovery May 20th, 2013 at the Institutes for Discovery Part III: $5,000 Mini-grant competition proposals due September 2013 date TBA These parts are interconnected, but there are opportunities for individuals to participate in one part without committing to the other parts.

Topics targeted to prepare participants for Parts II and III These sessions will be taped and available on the Discovery Challenge website for those who cannot attend Intellectual Property Forum, Dec 10, WID Satellite Session on Dec 5, HSLC 2276 Presenting your research to public audiences, Feb 27, 2013 Presented by Tim Miller Hosted in collaboration with MRSEC Other topics in spring semester 2013: How to prepare research poster – January 2013, date TBD Entering an interdisciplinary collaboration – March 2013, date TBD Technology commercialization – April 2013, date TBD Stay tuned for further details Tim Miller-communications expert with science training who has worked with scientists at multiple research universities to effectively communicate their research. We will have a session on how to prepare a research poster. We are still organizing this, but we hope to have which will be given by 2 individuals who are experts on how the brain processes visual information, and can talk to us on how to use that information to create a more effective poster.

Free to Attend and Present! Research abstracts due March 1, 2013 May 20, 2013 at the Institutes for Discovery For graduate students and post-docs across the UW-Madison campus Goals: Present your work Find collaborators to facilitate interdisciplinary research and potentially enter phase three grant competition All research welcome – focus on impactful work, desire to advance some aspect of project through collaboration Four $500 prizes for best presenters I’m not sure if we should mention a keynote speaker if we have no idea who it will be at this point….

Prepare for research symposium: To Attend Registration Short Wufoo application Abstract 500 words or less Summarize research, target audience is non-expert scientist Be careful about disclosure of intellectual property Attending or watching the IP info session can be helpful!

Prepare for research symposium: For the Day of Symposium Poster or alternative presentation medium Existing posters welcome! Must fit on 48”X 48” board Limited support available for printing (first come, first served) Alternative media presentations available upon request Show your prototype, media presentation, novel design Requests or questions can be sent to: Side Panel: limit: 24" wide by 48" high

Must fit on 48”X 48” board Side Panel: limit: 24" wide by 48" high Each section 250 words or less: Project overview: objectives and impact of your project Seeking a collaborator: what aspects would be improved by collaboration Ideal attributes of a collaborator: skills, techniques

Poster Judging Criteria: What you need to know to WIN! Poster Appearance Visually appealing and professional Organized and clear Background makes clear why this research is being done Poster Content Methodology Novel and creative ideas Side Panel is present! Understandable to a non-expert Poster Presentation Clear and concise Two-minute limit! – hint, practice while timing yourself. Say that judges are faculty, WARF staff, and professionals

At the research symposium: The Fun Part! Stand by your poster/alternative medium during your designated time 2 main poster sessions with alternating times of presenting Give judges a 2 minutes presentation to be considered for the presenter prizes during your designated time Visit other posters to help find a collaborator and explore research on campus Attend keynote lecture and see work done by previous Discovery Challenge Winners! Judges will be a mix of faculty, WARF staff and students

Goal: To provide seed money ($5000) for collaborative, interdisciplinary research Eligibility Must be graduate students or post-docs at UW-Madison Must work in teams of at least 2, representing at least 2 different departments At least one team member must have participated in Part II: Research symposium Must propose a collaborative, interdisciplinary project

15 Discovery Challenge, Part III: Mini-Grant Competition
The mini-grant proposal due September 2013 submit a short (~2 page) application on the collaborative, interdisciplinary project, with budget and timeline Judging based on: Significance and innovation of the collaborative project Appropriateness of collaborative approach Potential of applicants Feasibility based on mini-grant award and other available resources Up to 3 mini-grants of as much as $5000 will be awarded by late September 2013
