Do Now: Discuss how much of a role you believe religion should have in government, politics, education, and in people’s daily lives.

Pilgrims vs. Puritans Puritans Pilgrims Predestination Separatists Good Works could not save those predestined for hell No one is certain of their spiritual status Wanted to totally purify the Church of England (Too corrupt) Pilgrims Separatists Didn’t want to share their churches with the “dammed” Believed in a total break from the Church of England

Plymouth Colony Some English Separatists moved to the Netherlands in 1608. Their children were becoming more Dutch than English. War with Spain seemed near. They were ready to move to the New World. Led by William Bradford, 35 Separatists joined 66 others on the Mayflower in 1620. Their sponsor, the Virginia Company, intended they land near the Hudson River. They landed instead at Cape Cod. Founded Plymouth Colony south of present-day Boston Colony never grew very large

The Mayflower 1620 group of 102 people (half separatists) set sail Virginia Co. gave them permission to settle Took a wrong turn due to winter and ended up in Cape Cod, MA

Mayflower Compact Signed November 11, 1620 Written and signed by Pilgrims before they got off the ship Agreement to form a crude government First official government document in the United States

How will the new colony be ruled? After sailing across the stormy Atlantic Ocean for two months, the Mayflower had finally landed—but in the wrong place. Too far north to be within the jurisdiction of any recognized authority, the colonists decided they must work together to survive. Even before landing on present-day Cape Cod, the 41 men had signed the Mayflower Compact, in which they promised allegiance to England’s King James and agreed to make just laws for the good of the colony. They also agreed that their government would be chosen by the people. In an age when monarchs ruled absolutely, the Mayflower Compact put the power to rule in the hands of the governed.

The First Year… Winter of 1620-21….only 44 of 102 survived Fall of 1621 = First Thanksgiving Colony survived with fur, lumber, fish, and Native America help Plymouth stayed small 1691 – 7,000 people

Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritan merchants formed the Massachusetts Bay Company. In 1630 John Winthrop set out with 11 ships and 700 people for New England. This colony grew faster than Plymouth. Other towns were established nearby. Massachusetts General Court was formed. Success of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies inspired the Great Migration. Over 20,000 English men and women came to settle in New England.

Dissent Among the Puritans Dissenters left the Massachusetts Bay Colony and settled new towns. Thomas Hooker, a Puritan minister, and his congregation settled in the Connecticut River Valley. They adopted America’s first written constitution: the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. It extended voting rights to all free men, not just church members.

Roger Williams – Rhode Island Williams was a popular minister “Forced Religion stinks in the nostrils of God” You had to purchase land from Native Americans Royal Charter = “National Sin” 1635 – Found guilty of “New and Dangerous Opinions” and exiled RI was about religious freedom and separation of Church and State RI is seen a “Sewer” Do you Agree with Williams or the Puritans? Education and Government in New England Massachusetts General Court passed education laws. Girls learned reading, writing, and some arithmetic. Boys had more education opportunities. By the 1700s Harvard and Yale colleges were available to them. By late 1700s most colonies were royal colonies. In town meetings church members and land owners voted on town matters.
