GLE: 2.3aC Vocabulary: House of Burgess: the Virginia assembly which was the first representative assembly in the American colonies Investor: person who puts money into a project to earn a profit Dissenter: person who disagrees with an official church

2 The First Colonies Benefit or Risk? Sir Walter Raleigh: 1585 Roanoke Island – Established Virginia (failed)/second attempt 1587 – disappeared 1607: English tries again

3 How did colonies enrich a nation? ColoniesEngland Provide raw materials to England Buy finished goods from England Could only Trade with England Imports cheap raw materials from the colonies Exports finished good to colonies and other nations Important terms: joint-stock company, investors, mercantilism, charter

4 Jamestown - 1607 Virginia Company sent 100 colonists to Chesapeake Bay Struggled * Illness from insects * Searched for treasure instead of preparing for winter Climate John Smith: Took control in 1608, only 38 colonists left (he returned to England and Colony struggled again) Lord De La Warr: Took control 1610 John Rolfe/Pocahontas – Improved relations between colonists and Powhatan tribe

5 Jamestown – Successful but Virginia Company falls Tobacco – Jamestown’s gold Virginia Company offers headright/indentured servant program 1619 – House of Burgess 1622 – Indian uprising King James takes control (Royal Colony)

6 New English Colonies 1500’s- 1600’s – King Henry VIII Separatists flee to Holland Virginia Company – agreed to help

7 1620 - The Pilgrims Mayflower Cape Cod – Massachusetts: Plymouth Too far north – charter given by the Virginia Company had not authority Mayflower Compact: Majority Rule

8 1630 -1640 The Great Migration Puritans - Massachusetts Bay Company Boston - Governor: John Winthrop Began with 1,000 colonists – grew to over 20,000 Congregations: Group of people belonging to the same church (became a religious common-wealth) – Congregationalists “The New England Way” Valued: Hard work, Education, Representative Government Dissenters – Caused Massachusetts to become a “seed” colony

9 Puritan Dissenters Rodger Williams: Colonists had no right to take Native American Lands, No one should be forced to attend Church, Shouldn’t force religious beliefs on others, Church and State should be separate (formed 1 st Baptist Church) Anne Hutchinson: Clergy were not automatically chosen by God for salvation New Hampshire Colony 1679 – Rhode Island (tolerated many religions)

10 Dissenters Continued 1639: Thomas Hooker Fundamental Orders of Connecticut: Non- church members could vote

11 Quakers Believed that God could speak to all and Puritan sermons and ministers were obstacles to the direct experience of God. Women were spiritually equal to men (Women could be preachers and missionaries) Puritans outraged!!! – Actions created martyrs - Mary Dryer

13 Create a Brochure Students will create a brochure encouraging colonists to join their community Choose a colony: Jamestown, Roanoke, Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire, Connecticut Bay Your brochure should have an accurate description of your colony – be sure to provide a detailed describe your religious practices, your government, and your economy – cover items such as: What rights do men and women have? How are your officials elected? Do they have to be a member of the official church? Do you have an official church? Etc…. Remember the characteristics of your colony must be accurate to history – Tell why your colony is the place to be. Points will also be given for creativeness, neatness, and illustrations Scoring Guide Will be Provided
