Where is RSE taught?   RSE is taught through a planned programme in PSHEE and Citizenship as well as in Science. It is taught either as discrete topics (such as Puberty in Year 5) or integrated into other units of work such as Ourselves – at an appropriate level to the needs and maturity of the pupils. Where needed RSE is differentiated to meet the needs of pupils.

How is RSE taught? Taught in mixed groups - this ensures that both boys and girls learn the same information An opportunity for discussion in single sex groups may be given after the teaching if appropriate Who is RSE taught by? Class teacher If appropriate the class teacher may be supported by external health professionals such as the school nurse

Ground Rules for RSE lessons: We listen when anyone else is speaking We do not ask questions about people’s personal or private lives We speak positively to each other We do not name anyone and say negative things about them We respect all our different ideas and opinions A confidential question box is available in the classroom should children want to ask questions anonymously

How to support your child Talk to your child about what they have learnt in RSE Answer their questions honestly Provide age appropriate books for them to read Point them in the direction of suitable web resources - e.g. bbc.co.uk - Bitesize KS2 – Relationships. www.barnardos.org.uk

YEAR 5 PUBERTY; GROWING UP AND CHANGING Pupils learn about the way we grow and change throughout the human lifecycle Pupils learn the physical changes associated with puberty Pupils learn about menstruation and wet dreams Pupils learn about the impact of puberty on physical hygiene and strategies for managing this

YEAR 6 PUBERTY, RELATIONSHIPS, PREGNANCY and CONCEPTION Pupils learn about the changes that occur during puberty Pupils learn to consider the different attitudes and values around gender stereotyping and consider their origin and impact Pupils learn what values are important to them in relationships and to appreciate the importance of friendship and trust in intimate relationships Pupils learn about human reproduction in the context of the human lifecycle Pupils learn how a baby is made and grows (Conception and Pregnancy) Pupils learn about roles and responsibilities of carers and parents Pupils learn where to find advice and support when they need it.
