Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) At St Lukes To introduce and outline the teaching of RSE to parents Thursday April 20th 2017 9.00-9.20 Julie Galton and Natalie Shulemaja

Outcomes Know what RSE is and what we teach in each year which is age-appropriate Know in more detail the content delivered in Upper Key Stage 2 Explored some resources used in Upper Key Stage 2 to answer any questions from parents and discuss possible strategies for supporting your child at home

What is Relationship and Sex Education at St Lukes? More than just teaching about the physical and emotional changes of puberty and reproduction Develop positive attitudes and beliefs underpinned by accurate knowledge and skills to navigate a successful path to adulthood and to recognising and building successful, healthy relationships

What is Relationship and Sex Education? not just about growing up, changes, body parts and reproduction enabling children to make and maintain healthy, caring and respectful relationships with others to feel good about themselves Helping children to gain knowledge, develop skills and positive attitudes

Values of faith, hope and love Principles for teaching RSE Values of faith, hope and love Context of healthy, loving relationships Importance of strong and stable relationships, including marriage for family life and bringing up children Emphasis on sexual relationships in the context of marriage Promote inclusion and respect for different families Correct scientific language

RSE and National Curriculum Science at KEY STAGE 1 ? Animals, including humans Year 1 Identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body associated with each sense Year 2 Notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults-introduce the processes of reproduction and growth in animals, recognise growth-not how reproduction occurs eg baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult

SRE and National Curriculum Science at KEY STAGE 2 ? Year 3 and 4-No content linked to RSE Year 5 Living things and their habitats Describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals different types of reproduction, including sexual reproduction in animals eg comparing how different animals reproduce and grow Animals, including humans Describe the changes as humans develop to old age Draw a timeline to indicate stages in the growth and development of humans. They should learn about the changes experienced in puberty Year 6-No content linked to RSE

Where is RSE taught?   RSE is taught through a planned programme in PSHEE and Citizenship as well as in Science. It is taught either as discrete topics (such as Puberty in Year 5) or integrated into other units of work such as Ourselves – at an appropriate level to the needs and maturity of the pupils. Where needed RSE is differentiated to meet the needs of pupils.

How is RSE taught? Taught in mixed groups - this ensures that both boys and girls learn the same information An opportunity for discussion in single sex groups may be given after the teaching if appropriate Who is RSE taught by? Class teacher If appropriate the class teacher may be supported by external health professionals such as the school nurse

Ground Rules for RSE lessons: We listen when anyone else is speaking We do not ask questions about people’s personal or private lives We speak positively to each other We do not name anyone and say negative things about them We respect all our different ideas and opinions A confidential question box is available in the classroom should children want to ask questions anonymously

How to support your child Talk to your child about what they have learnt in RSE Answer their questions honestly Provide age appropriate books for them to read Point them in the direction of suitable web resources - e.g. bbc.co.uk - Bitesize KS2 – Relationships. www.barnardos.org.uk

YEAR 5 PUBERTY; GROWING UP AND CHANGING Pupils learn about the way we grow and change throughout the human lifecycle Pupils learn the physical changes associated with puberty Pupils learn about menstruation and wet dreams Pupils learn about the impact of puberty on physical hygiene and strategies for managing this
