2. WHY do we need SRE at Primrose Hill?

3. Why deliver SRE? 'The Government believe that all pupils should benefit from high-quality sex and relationships education at school; that schools have a clear role in reinforcing the information that children receive from parents, and in providing them with a safe and supportive environment in which to develop the knowledge they need to make wise and informed choices later in life.' (Nick Gibb, Minister of State for Schools, February 2012)

4. Aims of an SRE programme The core aims of an SRE programme in school, taking account of the age, maturity, ability and background of children and young people, should be to enable them to: acquire the knowledge and understanding they need about their bodies, how they work and how they develop; develop the skills and confidence to think clearly and communicate effectively about feelings and relationships; develop the skills and confidence to make decisions and to identify and deal with influences, pressures and risks; develop self esteem and the capacity to value and respect both themselves and other people.

5. The government statistics: Teenage pregnancy is at its lowest in 40 years. (Office of National Statistics) It is believed that sex education is being taught much better in schools and preparing the children as they develop for later life. 88% of the parents of school-aged pupils want SRE to be taught in all schools. Most parents (84%) want both home and school to have a role in SRE. NAHT (National Association of Headteachers)

Science -Government Requirements for schools Through the statutory National Curriculum requirements for Science children are required to learn: KS1 Identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body Upper Key Stage 2 Science Describe the changes as humans develop to old age Recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function Describe the life cycle of a mammal Describe the life process of reproduction in animals Summary - Human reproduction is part of the Science curriculum (Statutory requirement)

7. P.S.H.E – Government non- statutory requirements for schools Children need to: Develop confidence and responsibilities to make the most of their abilities Develop a healthy, safer lifestyle Develop good relationships and respect the differences between people

8. Why SRE in our school? At Primrose Hill Primary Academy we believe that the essential aim of sex and relationships education should be to provide pupils with the knowledge and skills to enable them to make informed and responsible choices in later life, emphasising the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

9. We believe that sex and relationships education should contribute to promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at school and of society and preparing pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

We also believe that sex and relationships education should be taught within a climate of trust, respect and appropriate confidentiality, in which pupils and adults feel able to talk openly and honestly. All health education issues are dealt with within the context of a family unit, referring to the stable loving relationship of adults with children.

11. Our aims and objectives To provide a secure, sensitive and caring curriculum where learning and discussion can take place. To provide information which is easy to understand, relevant and appropriate for the needs, age and maturity of the pupils. Encourage the use of correct vocabulary.

12. To foster self worth and awareness, together with a sense of moral responsibility. To help the children to acquire and practice important life skills such as critical thinking, decision making, communication and assertiveness. To ensure that sex education is available to all children regardless of gender, ability, cultural or religious background in line with the schools policy on equal opportunities.

13. Working with parents Our school is committed to working with parents. Under the Education Act 1996 parents have the legal right to excuse their children from aspects of sex education which do not form part of the statutory Science National Curriculum. It is possible for a child to be excused from selected lessons which must be identified before the unit has begun. It is important for parents to know that the lessons do follow on from each other and there are sometimes elements of the previous lesson in the following lesson.

14. Working with parents  Parents also need to be aware that arrangements will have to be made to ensure that the child is still taught the statutory parts of the SRE curriculum. Parents need to be aware that SRE can occur at any time if it arises naturally from class discussion, and that the right to exempt will not inhibit such discussion. 15. In summary…. Primrose Hill Primary Academy believes that by delivering high quality personal health and relationship education we are giving our children the life skills they need in the wider community. We wish to provide our children with a safe and supportive environment in which to develop the knowledge they need to make wise and informed choices later in life.
