1. Why teach about sex and relationships?
Sex and relationships education is essential if young people are to make responsible and well informed decisions about their lives.
The objective of sex and relationships education is to help and support young people through their physical, emotional and moral development.

Sex and relationships education is about learning to develop good relationships and respecting differences between people. We aim for children to develop confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships and are prepared for puberty.

3. What is included in sex and relationships education?
Children learn about the importance of values and individual conscience and moral considerations.
They will learn to manage emotions and relationships confidentially and sensitively, developing an appreciation of the consequences of choices made.
Children will also learn and understand about physical development at appropriate stages.

4. Who is involved in sex and relationships education?
Sex and relationships education is not the sole responsibility of schools. We want to work in effective partnership with parents and others in the wider community such as health professionals.
For example the school nurse service has experience and expertise in SRE and working with children. Their approach compliments the philosophy and aims of the school programme. During such visits the teacher is present so they can follow up the input at a later stage.

5. Parental involvement
We recognise the importance of parents in teaching their children about sex and relationships and maintaining the culture & ethos of the family.
Parents do have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of the sex and relationships education provided at school except for those parts included in the statutory curriculum (life processes common to humans and animals and the main stages of the human life cycle).
If parents wish to withdraw their child from sex and relationships education then they must meet and discuss their decision with the Head teacher and demonstrate how they will provide this education for their child at home.

6. What resources are available to support parents when discussing sex and relationships at home?
There are several charities and organisations who provide advice via the telephone and leaflets to support you.
