INTERNET JOURNALISM WORK FOR SEMETER B

BLOGING Blogs are publications for quick updates also used for in-depth analysis, personal reflection, audios and images, videos and texts. Consists of post known as entries by diarist and articles by journalists. Can be used as a medium of communicating directly to an audience…publishing on the web WHY BLOG? One can blog for their own personal reasons, such as having an online dairy, others professionally in the case of journalist sourcing leads and stories and some people for the fun of it, sharing feelings and thoughts with the rest of the world.

BREAKDOWN OF A BLOG Post- articles or entries on the blog Pages- the different content found on, such as the about section which gives information on the blogs author, history, subject and etc. Archives- part of the blog where users can navigate through past posts

STEPS OF CREATING A BLOG Step 1: Choose the focus Have a specific and clear focus by selecting a narrow topic aimed at a specific audience who will share and have interest on your blog Step 2: Start posting Write about any topic you desire, by responding to something, suggest an idea, interview someone, blog an event, ask a question, reflect on something or pick a fight to generate traffic. Step 3: Comment & link Post comments on other bloggers page, this makes them notice your presence and more likely to view and comment on your blog. Linking to other sources also gets you noticed

PODCASTS & AUDIO SLIDESHOWS Interviews & discussions A popular digital audio file that allows anyone to broadcast or blog online about anything out loud, from interviews, forums, sports reports and updates to documentaries and fashion shows, with no restriction of style and length. A listener can easily listen to the podcast at any giving time or day, pause, rewind and fast-forward at a push of a button. Some podcasts a available for free on line and other at a subscription through RSS feeds of a publication. Audio formats & kits Audio can be used a stand-alone story (interview) As part of a picture story or audio slideshow As a video stream(listened to via the internet without downloading it) Interviews & discussions Keep control of the microphone Avoid interruptions. If there are any errors during the interview, record the segment again

EDITING Before you start the editing process, make sure that all your notes and audios are in order and correct. Don’t cut a character of a piece Cut out blips such as coughs, sneezes, and mistakes Select an introductory audio to give the piece meaning and direction

PUBLISHING To publish audio to the web, you need to save it in an audio file format such as MP3 and export it as an MP3 and then upload it to the web, after installing a LAME.

VIDEO SHOOTING A VIDEO Editing software packages Windows movie maker iMovie media composer & Adobe Premier Elements Find an angle of your story Know how to frame video Establish your wide shot, medium shot and medium close up

EDITING & PUBLISHING This is the part where you cut, move and delete video and audio to construct a story, as well as decide on which are suitable for a clear beginning, middle and end. This process takes time.

IMPORT & EDIT How long should it be After connecting your camera to your computer you need to import your video to your selected software program, cutting and pasting as well as adding your audio to create an ambient sound. How long should it be When producing for the web you don’t need to worry about length as compared to TV production. A 1 to 3 minute video accompanied by an audio can tell a story well. For a feature story aim for about 10 minutes and for loner stories such as documentaries break them into parts to create a series video Adding audio You can record a separate piece of audio to run with the video Remember to ask for permission when using music and copyrighted material You can also download copyright free music for free from websites Give credit to musicians

PUBLISHING VIDEO Videos need to be compressed to a format suitable for the internet. A popular format is HD which uses up more memory as it comes in more than one size Videos are better when they have a short explanatory text or caption. Promote your video on links in text on similar subject stories Upload to several video-sharing sites Make videos available as an RSS feed

INTERACTIVITY Control over input & output The choices made by producers and editors of what material to publish to the public and what not to. What is interactivity? It is a process were two or more communication parties interact with each other by exchanging messages, online users are able to communicate with journalist and with each other by giving their opinions on stories to news agencies as well as discuss these topics amongst themselves What does it mean for journalists? Journalist now have the responsibility of giving user power of control, by making the content downloadable and postable on other social medias

TECHNOLOGIES OF INTERACTIVITY A number of mediums can be used for interactivity which allow a three way communication process between the author, reader and other readers. These tools can collect people of the same interest and interacting with each other. Linking – this is a great way of promoting interactivity for parties as it provides a lot of sources on a story in a package form. Maps- a simple map to help the user gain more information of the story told, showing the affected area. Forums (message boards)- Online communities set as a discussion spaces found used to interact with other users about any topic made available to them

USER GENRATED CONTENT (UGC) UGC technologies: What is UGC? User generated content is information gained from users who have contributed to the website, either by commenting, editing, or uploading images and even starting a blog themselves   UGC: different audience, different issues people in the country audience for the online product audience that contribute UGC Video & audio Tagging & social recommendation Wikis- collaborated journalism
