2 Kings 13:2-14:29 2 Chronicles 25:5-24 Lesson 22 2 Kings 13:2-14:29 2 Chronicles 25:5-24

Israel Moabite raiders come into Israel Every spring Some Israelites are burying a man They see the raiders coming and hastily put the corps in the nearest tomb The dead man touches Elisha’s corpse, came to life and stood up 2 Ch 24:7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken into the house of God, and had also presented all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD to the Baals.

Ben-hadad Reigning in Syria is place of his father Hazael He is defeated by Joash three times Just as Elisha had prophesied when near his death Joash struck ground three times Towns earlier lost to Hazael are recovered

Amaziah in Judah Edom had rebelled against Judah in the days of Jehoram Amaziah wants to regain control over them He numbers his army and sets commanders over hundreds and thousands 300,000 chosen men of war

Amaziah in Judah Amaziah fears his army is too small to defeat Edom (remember how many men Gideon had?) He hires 100,000 soldiers from Israel Man of God tells him the men of Israel must not go with them God is not with Israel God will defeat you in battle

Amaziah in Judah Amaziah had paid a hundred talents of silver for their help (3 ¾ tons) “What about my money?” The man of God told Amaziah the Lord could give him much more that that Amaziah sent the Israelites home The Israelite soldiers were not happy

Amaziah in Judah Amaziah was successful in the battle against Edom However, he brought their gods back with him God was angry 2 Chronicles 25:15b "Why have you sought the gods of the people, which could not rescue their own people from your hand?"

Amaziah in Judah Amaziah was angry and threatened to kill the man of God “who made you the king’s counselor?” 2 Chronicles 25:16b Then the prophet ceased, and said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not heeded my advice."

Israelite Mercenaries Angry over their dismissal Raided towns of northern Judah They killed 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of plunder This sets up war between Judah and Israel Amaziah of Judah vs Joash of Israel

War Amaziah challenged Joash “Come face me” Joash told Amaziah he was arrogant and proud because he had defeated Edom Stay home or it will mean your downfall Amaziah pressed for battle God is going to punish Judah for worshipping Edomite gods

War They meet in battle at Beth-Shemesh in NW Judah Joash defeats Amaziah takes him to Jerusalem tears down part of the wall of Jerusalem takes silver and gold plus temple treasures and some hostages Joash returns to Samaria

Joash (Jehoash) dies In the 15th year of Amaziah king of Judah Jeroboam II, son of Joash, is king of Israel He is very wicked He is the third descendant of Jehu to have the throne of Israel Not much is told of his reign

Background Jeroboam II reigned about 26 years when Uzziah became king in Judah Their rules overlapped about 15 years Their combined territory would have matched Solomon’s!! Assyria was in a period of decline between two kings God showed mercy to Israel and Judah

Doom is coming We are now maybe 25-30 years until the fall of Israel What a great difference in their prosperity now and the doom to come God showed them mercy until it was finally too late Judgment must come
