DO NOW: Open notebook (if you have yours or use a sheet of filler paper provided) On the top line, write today’s date – 9/8/17 On the next line, write – “Do Now Safety”

Can you tell me the message that each picture is trying to convey?

Brainstorming… State as many lab safety rules as you can recall from previous years…

Group activity - As a group come up with your “top” five safety rules Group activity - As a group come up with your “top” five safety rules. In a complete sentence, write the rules in the space provided. Everyone must agree on the rules and write it on his/her paper. I

Top 5 Safety Rules for Period 3 Always wear & use protective gear and tie hair and loose clothes back Do not leave the lab station to wander and fool around Tell teacher about accidents, ask questions to clarify No eating, drinking and cell phoning in the lab. Know the lab instructions & clean up procedures And… always refer to the Montville Lab Safety Contract when in doubt.

Top 5 Safety Rules for Period 8 Follow teacher’s and lab’s instructions Wear and dress appropriately, - use goggles, tie hair back, closed-toed shoes Don’t drink or eat anything in the lab and don’t smell any chemicals. Do not cell phone. Report any accident, problems to the teacher. No horse-play. Stay at your lab bench and keep it clean and tidy before, during and after the lab. And… always refer to the Montville Lab Safety Contract when in doubt.

Montville Safety Lab Rules Can you find the rules that you did not brainstorm as a class or even discussed as a group… Review the safety contract.

Safety In the Lab Lesson Part I Recall lab rules Read Montville HS safety lab rules Identify rules that pertain to most biology labs Part II Write a story describing a situation in which a student doesn’t follow safety rules. Had a Bad Day song

Use your knowledge and resources of safety rules to create a story that could be title, “You Had a Bad Lab” which is about a student who demonstrates or experiences an unlawful day in the lab. Write the rough draft in your notebook. Then transfer it to the lined paper. Print neatly or type on computer in Font 12 and attach to the activity sheet.

Writing a Good Story Legible handwriting Coherent Use proper grammar Good taste

For the next class, you must have the following:, Signed and returned safety agreement A final copy of your story on the designated form. Printing is preferred because others will have to read it. Have someone proof read your story. Both are graded homework assignments.
