What you need: Writing Utensil, Bellwork Sheet, Journal. Due Today! Lab Fee, About Me Page, Syllabus Signed (have out and ready). By Friday: Buff Binder, Notecards (4 sets), Ziplock bags or Clorox Wipes, Photo Assignment. Bellwork Today: In exactly 32 words, answer today’s “Essential Question”: How can I stay safe during labs?

H – Read Instructions thoroughly first. Ask 3 then me A – Follow Lab Instructions and Lab Safety Rules; (GOGGLES must be worn for all labs!!) M – Remain at your station with your group – may move to get materials P – Work as a team. Complete ALL PARTS of the lab.

8 Lab Safety Rules: Dress for lab Pull back long hair.
Wear closed-toe shoes during a lab. If you wear contacts, it is best to wear glasses in the lab. If you wear contacts, be sure to tell your teacher. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Always wear your lab safety goggles and lab apron when in the lab. Chemical safety Do not directly sniff any substance in a lab. Always waft! Let’s do it together now….WAFT!!!

Eye Wash station* Safety Shower* Fire blanket/extinguisher* Emergency Passes* Items with a (*) are only used during an emergency. Your teacher will notify you when it is appropriate to use one of these items.

10 Lab Safety Rules: 5. Lab behavior
Never touch lab equipment without a teacher’s permission. Do not touch/turn on water or gas faucets without a teacher’s permission. Never eat or put lab materials in your mouth. Do not chew gum in the lab. Follow directions exactly as they are given. If you have a question on a lab procedure, ask before going on. Tell a teacher immediately ifthere is an emergency or something is spilled or glass is broken.

11 Fire Emergency Evacuation Plan
Follow the route your teacher describes. Gather at your assigned area when outside. Look for your teacher, holding up a sign with his/her room number. Remain with your teacher until told to go inside (attendance will be taken). When we return to the building, go directly back to class.

14 WHAT IS HAPPENING?! With your partner, look at the picture of the lab.
Find as many things wrong with it as possible. When you have done that, each person will create a “Lab Safety One-Pager” to correct one of the “wrongs” that we discussed in class today. Your One-Pager must include the following: Using only the FRONT side of a sheet of computer paper you need to demonstrate your understanding of lab safety. Your page must include: At least 6 different colors (black, white, and grey don’t count) A title and symbolic border 3 graphics of safety equipment 1 bad scenario AND the solution 3 key terms and brief definitions This page must also include a poem, rap or song about LAB SAFETY. Each letter of the topic will start a new line: Lab Safety, Lab Safety Always on my mind Being a responsible classmate Surely is worth my time
