1 Mrs. Jeannite. mglemaud@dadeschools.net
Welcome to Biology Mrs. Jeannite.

2 What is biology? Biology is……

3 What do I need for this class?
The student is expected to bring the following to class daily: Class notebook Calculator Pen and pencil Color pencil Ruler Good attitude

4 Grades The grades in this class will consist of the following:
Tests, which are worth 3 grades Lab reports will count as double grades. Quizzes, homework and class work count as one-half to one grade. Class notebooks will be graded periodically. If you have an excused absence you must make up your work within the week that you return. Otherwise work will NOT be accepted after the due date unless student has received prior permission.

5 Science Current Events
Whenever we meet on Fridays (about every 2 weeks) you will be expected to be ready to discuss a recent scientific paper or article.  I expect you to find articles on a subject or subjects that interest you.             The article should come from a recognized source.  Good sources are New Scientist, The New York Times, The Economist, Time, Newsweek or scientific journals like Nature and Science.  If you need help with the selection of articles I will be willing to help you during lunchtime or after school. Do not leave this until the last minute!            I expect you to summarize the article by giving the main idea; explain what was done in the study; what results were obtained and why they are significant.  You must turn in the article with the summary. Make sure that in your summary you do not copy sentences from the article, but summarize them in your own words.            Towards the end each semester you will write a reflective essay on the papers that you have summarized.

6 Conduct You are expected to: Come to class every day.
Respect everyone in the classroom. No profanity. No unauthorized cell phone use in class. Be on time to class. Keep your work location clean. Stay in your seat at all times, unless requested to move for an assignment. Wear proper school attire. Bathroom passes should be for emergencies only.

7 Why study Biology?

8 Remember: “It is NOT your aptitude, but your attitude, that determines your altitude.”

9 Goals!!!! It is important for all of us to have goals in life.
There are short term goals and long term ones.

10 Long Term Goals On your own paper list THREE long term goals that you want to accomplish in the next 10 years. Below them list things that you must accomplish first for you to reach these goals. Below that list steps that you need to complete in order to accomplish the things listed above

11 Lab Safety Equipment Safety Shower Fire Blanket Fire Extinguisher
Eye Wash

12 Lab Safety Procedures 1. Follow all instructions given by the teacher. Only materials and equipment authorized by the teacher may be used. 2. Be prepared by studying the assigned investigation before coming to class. Resolve any questions about the procedure before beginning work. 3. Wear safety goggles at all times when in close proximity to an ongoing lab. 4. Wear a lab apron when working with hazardous chemicals, hot apparatus, or glass that could shatter. 5. Tie back long hair and remove dangling jewelry. 6. Do not wear loose-fitting sleeves or open-toed shoes in the laboratory. 7. Do not wear contact lenses while conducting any experiment involving the use of chemicals. 8. Do not inhale or ingest anything. 9. Notify the teacher immediately of any problem.

13 Lab Safety 10. Keep lab stations clear of all unnecessary materials and observe good housekeeping practices. 11. Do not work alone in the lab or without the teacher’s supervision. 12. Do not perform unauthorized experiments. 13. Do not eat, drink, chew gum, or apply cosmetics while conducting a lab. 14. Do not store food or beverages in the lab area. 15. Clean your lab area with a wet paper towel before and after use. Notify the teacher of any spills. 16. Read chemical labels three times: when you pick it up, just before use, and after you have finished.

14 Lab Safety 17. Many liquids should not be poured down the drain. Ask before pouring. 18. Never take chemicals, supplies, or equipment out of the lab without the knowledge and consent of the teacher. 19. Be alert and proceed with caution. Take care not to bump other students. Horseplay while conducting a lab can result in removal from class. The student may be sent to administration and not allowed to make up the lab.

15 Lab Reports Each INDIVIDUAL student is responsible for turning in their OWN Lab Report. Lab reports must be TYPED or written NEATLY in BLUE ink. You CANNOT use White out on a Lab report. If you need to correct a mistake, you draw a line over mistake and write correction above it. Teacher must still be able to see original mistake. Only use the FRONT side of each paper. Title page must include the following: Name of Lab Date Lab was done Period Your name Partners names

16 Lab Reports Purpose and Materials Page:
A one or two sentence description of the purpose of the lab. Materials must be listed in number fashion. Make sure sizes and concentrations are included. Procedure Page A numbered easy to read description of the procedures must be included. The steps should be able to help you and your partners to complete the lab successfully. If you or your partners have to ask questions on what to do next then your procedures are NOT clear enough. Data Page: All measurements and calculations must be included on this page. You must include the rough draft with all the numbers recorded during lab time. Make sure all units are recorded. Remember about accuracy in your reports.

17 Lab Reports Conclusion:
Make sure your conclusion answers your purpose. Make sure you use YOUR data to support your conclusion. Do NOT blame equipment for failures. Address problems encountered during lab and SHOW how they could have affected your results. Give advice on how you would do lab differently next time in order to get more or more accurate information.
